do people think there will be much difference between Bob and Boyd? i have gone Bob at D2 as he is more durable but have the cash for Boyd

Grufflez

Id take Boyd every day of the week, all players get 2 rests this year anyway.
If its Boyd's last year he doesn't have to play safely just my opinion, if i could afford it he'd be my D1

So I am now looking likely to roll the dice on 1 mid price defender (LOL crazy how things change!)

I've narrowed it down to Lonergan and Seedsman. Both cheap and both capable of pushing 90 IMO - well being good enough for D6 come seasons end

Have Lonergan in, but am really tempted to somehow squeeze in The Seed

Had Lonergan all preseason but the extra 20K was needed so gone to Seeds

Start with Lonergan, much prefer an onballer to a rebound defender, particularly given Smith & Laird have also been used in the role. After 2 rounds you can make a corrective trade if need be, don't forget about Cannon either, I really think he could turn it around this year.

I had Bob from day one last year and he was fantastic for me. Great POD imo.

As for Seedsman, much prefer Lonergan over him - probably won't run both with Hurn in there too.

I see Seed more of a wingman than rebounding defender

Honestly, if Bartel wasn't a defender at 470k I would seriously look to start all of Lonergan, Seed and McKenzie!

I'm really tempted to throw all of my money into the other 3 lines and get them cherry ripe with depth, and just go insanely cheap and risky down back

I really feel like this year is one out of the box and bucking the trend by structuring up completely different to previous years is worth trying

There's no doubt in my mind that this strategy could pay off if the right selections are made, yes it's risky but you don't win this game without pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Looking at the numbers last year, Roberton & McMillan both made 200k, McDonald, Laird, Picken & Pearce made 150k, KK made 100k and others like Ibbo around 80k. There will be gems and I don't think it's as radical as some people tend to believe, especially when you consider the extra points you gain from having an 80+ scorer on the field.

I think with this strategy too, because you would make sure your mids, ruck and fwd line are so solid, you only need the defenders you select, in particular the rookies to get through the first 1/3 of the season, because your first upgrades will be down  back anyway seeing as your other lines will be solid enough and won't require work til after you've got your defense in shape

I'll toy around with this approach

Like it but just one thing to remember is downgrade options in defence.  Not a lot on the horizon.  Looked at it and may start Hibberd in mids to give another downgrade option when some defender rookies maxed out.

RaisyDaisy

Don't really need downgrade options in the backs at all with this approach

Forward/Mid rookies will be downgraded and mooed and then def rookies will be upgraded
