For those who have been living under a rock and might have missed it, we've traded our first pick in the draft (#17) for Jack Redden from Brisbane. Tough inside player who loves a tackle and is just hitting his prime at 24 years of age.

Here are his 2012 highlights, arguably his best season. Part of the reason for his move was he was frustrated at not being able to hit the heights of this year since, so hopefully we can see something close to this for the next 8 years ;)

My favourite parts:

Contested marks at 1:28, 2:18
The entire play at 1:30 and the elite finish on his left
The awesome run-down on (funnily enough) Scooter at 1:58

Set-shots and goal sense looks really good too for an inside mid imo!

:'(

One of my favourite players

Yeah I'm a pretty big fan of his! Definite upgrade on Scooter imo, especially if he can get back to his best. Only really cost us pick 17 for 37 too!

Was surprised to hear that both clubs were satisfied with this deal!
Why are Brisbane so angry about the offered Leuy compensation if they are willing to give up Redden for #17?

Yep, and furthermore, why are they drawing a line in the sand with Aish while letting Redden walk to this years runners up for pick 17?

There are a couple of differences here which I will explain as to why Brisbane are playing hard ball with Aish.

Aish is out of contract this year and despite repeated requests to club to advise intentions he refused to do so finally at last minute requesting a trade to Collingwood. As is the clubs right with new recruits they are exercising their right to force a player to the draft rather than nominate a club.  (My views on players nominating a club to be traded 2 after 2 years are well known hence why I support the club although I believe a deal with Pies may eventuate).

Redden advised the club he wished to be traded to West Coast,  He becomes an free agent next year so why not seek a trade while we have currency. First Round would appear reasonable given the circumstances especially as we will have to use picks to secure academy draftees. Redden was only a second Round pick originally compared with Berger who was a first round pick.

Since 2011 the stats for most tackles laid

1. Priddis
2. Redden

pretty good deal for both clubs then??  ???    ;)

though, with the shallow draft pool I see in most commentary, probably not the best for Lions?

having said that, the rumour is that Redden didn't like Rockwiz's leadership style - wonder how much of this is true because all other things being equal Lions would've fought harder to keep Reddo imo ... that seems to be the indicator to me ...  :-X   ;)

Ringo

Is best for us as we will need pick 17 to secure our Academy kids thanks to the VFL come AFL. (Sydney in same boat to secure Mills I think).

Rumours persist that some players are unhappy with Rockys leadership style but he is in trhe Voss mould as skipper leads by example and expects others to follow. Not afraid to call players out which is why these rumours surface. ( I have witnessed a few on field confrontations)

Toga

Redden and Rocky were best mates weren't they? ???

And correct - Rocky tried to talk him into staying.

So why'd he want to leave??  ???
His partner is from SA as well so closer to home maybe.  He also felt he needed a fresh challenge to envigorate him. His stats for last year in games he played were not as good as previous years. Also to be fair Lions are still probably 2/3 years away drom challenging for finals and maybe he wanted a taste of success earlier which he will get at West Coast. Reckon you guys will be real contenders next season with lessons learnt from this years finals series.

Closer to home??? One thing you need to remember about Perth is it's far, far away :)

Sorry couldn't help it. Have driven both, a few times to Perth. Wish they were closer but your point stands.
