"The AFL Commission has today spoken to all club CEO's and will allow clubs to trade future draft picks, effective immediately.

Clubs must only trade one year into the future and clubs must make at least two first round draft picks in any four year period.

If a club trades it's first round pick, it may not trade any future pick for that same draft or club may keep their first round draft pick and trade later round picks.

Words are from AFL Media and Communications manager Patrick Keane at the AFL."

Awwww yeah. This is going to make things even more fun and confusing for Phantom Draft players haha.

I don't think it's necessarily a good thing if you're looking for a balanced comp, but it's certainly fun in the American sports. So why not :P

Capper

But what happens if picks are needed for academy players?

For instance, if the Lions have 3 academy players and want to use next years picks to get them. Does this mean they can only use R1 or everything except R1??

tbagrocks

What a bunch of rejects ::)  Why are they so hell bent on yankeeing up our game? ::)

Stupid flowering assholes! ::)

The real disadvantage I see in it is that clubs will penalise themselves should a great draft crop emerge in the year they have given up first draft pick up.

Can work it reverse also, but i don't like it at all tbh.

thats the risk of doing this. As Grazz said other teams will be at an advantage if they stockpile picks in a good draft. This is what recruiters are for.

I like the idea, would love to see it trialled.

Brings forth even further importance on club scouts and recruiters because ultimately they will have the last decision on what happens

Yep this!

Puts an enormous amount of pressure on young players if they use a lot of picks for them.

Im glade they brought in a rule to help Victorian clubs out though. They are the ones that really need the help

Incorrect. This rule was brought in to help clubs with youth academies as the previous new rule was very bad for those clubs. If Sydney wanted all their youth academy players, they would have to fork out either all their picks or perhaps miss out. This way, they will be able to trade players for picks for the next year, so they have more picks to use on their youth academy players as the draft picks now equate to a certain amount of points.

Has it's pros and cons but im not a fan if im honest, think it assists some to much and others not enough.
Does little to create a fair comp across the country. Happy to be convinced otherwise but at the minute not a fan.
