With Brisbane languishing at the bottom of the ladder time to consider what happens going forward.

http://mobile.news.com.au/national/james-aish-and-matthew-leuenberger-expected-to-leave-brisbane-lions-hope-to-receive-priority-draft-pick-from-afl/story-e6frfkp9-1227460694311

Interesting article that sums up the Lions predicament and the shafting of our academy picks as per these lines:

"Even with a priority pick giving Brisbane three top-20 selections in November, it will have challenges.
If it finishes bottom, it might recruit key tall Josh Schache â€" son of former Brisbane Bear Laurie â€" then Lions academy pair Ben Keays and Eric Hipwood.
Yet through new bidding rules, that pair â€" both ranked 15-20 in the draft â€" will wipe out all their later picks."

So basically if we are to gain Keays and Hipwood we lose other draft picks. Just to show how we were done over by Eddie McGuire and co.

Anyway back to the club:
Berger and Aish look certain to leave.  Berger is a free agent so hope can get a reasonable compensation pick and with Aish hopefully we can get a good deal.  Time for the club to stand some ground and not give in easily like two years ago. Even if it means forcing players into the draft. Time to let clubs make the decisions rather than players.

Comment on Fringe Players and Players who may want to leave:
Staker should be let go or retire.
Adcock should be traded similar to Patful last year if he desires to leave.
McGuane should be de-listed and picked up in Rookie draft if we want him
Paine should be given another season to see if he has it. Injury has effected him
West will be back up ruck if Berger leaves.
Golby could be used as trade bait as he has slipped down the pecking order.
Mayes - Maybe trade bait as well to get decent offers from Adelaide clubs.
Lester, Cutler and Bewick  - Should be retained for depth

Young Players I believe we should pull out all stops to retain and build club on going into the future are Paparone (who has been a revelation across HB this year, Andrews, Taylor, Green, McStay (although he needs to work at ground level), Clarke, Gardiner and Nick Robertson.
Close and Freeman hopefully injury free and get a chance to show if they can develop into Key Forwards

Beams, Robinson and Christensen trades appear to be beneficial at this stage.
Zorko, Hanley,Martin, Redden and Rockliff can be satisfied with their performances this year although injury effected some,.

Zac O'Brien should be kept on Senior list to replace Maguire.

The elephant in the room for players imo is Daniel Rich - Has not really stepped up this year with our injuries.  Seems to have lost a fair bit of his pace since his leg injury and maybe we should offer him for trade to try and lure that key forward.

On the forward situation rumours are strong that Lachlan Henderson maybe in our sights. Undecided on that one but maybe Dixon's injury issues have scared us of him.

With off field issues nearly all sorted (training grounds and HQ the only real outstanding one) let us hope this translates to performance on the field and clubs want to come to Brisbane.

Have been through all the ups and down with Brisbane since 1988 so know we can come back from the pits but need the support of the AFL in this NRL dominated state,

Sorry for the length but tried to cover most players

Capper

If i were Brisbane i would be going for a Pie FS with the first pick so they use their picks to get him.

I dont know if you will use all youir picks for the 3 players. havent heard any clubs chasing any of those players.

Can you get Josh Schache with FS?? Did his dad play enough games?

So with Goose gone, Aish and Berger probably going they will be replaced by Schache, Keays and Hipwood.

Do you go after someone like Tipett as his contract runs out after 2016?

Ringo

His dad Laurie Scache only played the 2 seasons with Brisbane 1991-92 returning to Woodville in 1993 hence why Schache says there is unfinished business at Brisbane. If he is available at our pick he will definitely be taken by us.

Keays is creating a bit of interest and with Hipwood lifting in the second Tier under 18 he has caught the eye as well.

Preaching to the converted i know but all 5 Qlders invited to draft are Academy Students. Why do we have to suffer further when we can get these kids who will have no go home issues yet have to pay for them. Would love Keays to go to Pies and want to come homer after one season just to see the reaction,

Seriously though I think we need a thorough review of our playing list and make some hard decisions. And I believe if we do not improve next year coach will be under threat as honeymoon period is over.

Wonder if the Eagles would make a play for Daniel Rich. Key position stocks are really not too bad and if we sent a player and a pick your way I think something mutually beneficial could be worked out.

wow really? Maybe if Scooter goes to Geelong. Would have thought that McGovern would be playing that rebounding HB when you get your backs back

Dunno about rebounding half back but potentially loose tall defender due to his marking ability with the ability to go forward if needed to change things up.

As soon as I posted that though I thought about how well we drafted last year and how well we've set our midfield this season, maybe Rich isnt as important as I thought.

I really honestly don't think we need Rich atm,who comes out for him?

Not sure, imagine his left boot as a weapon though. Cant tag Priddis, Gaff, Rich, Hurn and Shuey

Yeah but I just can't find a spot for him in the best 22 atm.
Maybe at seasons end when we see who goes, then we might have a better idea of where he might fit in.

Toga

Ringo do you think Brisbane will be interested in Dave Astbury? Looked like being an important part of the Tigers' back 6 last year but hasn't been able to find a place this year... Rumours are that he could be on the move, and IMO might be a good value addition to the Brisbane defense.

Ringo

Could be Toga. We probably need someone with a bit of experience to replace sauce whilst youngsters continue to develop. Gardiner, Clarke, Andrews will be solid in years to come but need a gap filler when Sauce retires which is why we were initially chasing Rance.

Surely you want Sheed to play in front of Rich

We need to just keep pumping games into Sheed he has already shown improvement this season and looks really good at times already.

Good write up Ringo, agree with most things you said.

I hope one of the academy boys goes to Collingwood then comes back homesick  :P

I wouldn't be so into losing both Mayes and Aish in the one year, would wait a year until we make a call to trade Mayes unless Aish re signs (Don't thing he will).

With McGuane we should just delist him and never turn back, would not like to rookie list him. However I wouldn't mind rookie listing Paine, but I don't think we'll do that. And Staker should just retire.

Rich has been extremely underwhelming this season and I'd be for trading him IF a fair trade comes up. Would want some fairly good in return though.

Lachie Henderson is an interesting option. Played 15 games for us years ago but was part of the deal for Fevola. Interesting that we want to bring him back. I'd be super keen on Charlie Dixon, absolute beast in the Gold Coast forward line, and even if there are injury concerns I want him.

meow meow

If Brisbane trade Luey they should definitely draft Sam Michael again.
