Posted this thread up  over at Bigfooty and thought it would be a good discussion for over here too.

Ok so in light of how pissed off I am at blowing my last 2 trades to get Ablett in only to get 21 points off him before getting injured for the season I have started to think about where I went wrong and how I can improve for next year.

Below is a rough team I am planning to try and start off with and a player list of players I am considering starting or bringing into my team though out the year.

I have also come up with Judd Magics 10 SC Commandments.....

Judd Magics possible starting 2016 team -

B - H.Shaw, R.Murphy, Simpson, Gibson, Scharenberg, rookie (rookie, rookie)

M - Ablett, Pendles, Fyfe, Rockcliff, Sloane, Selwood, Petracca, rookie (rookie, rookie. rookie)

R - S.Martin, Naitinui (rookie)

F - Gray, Martin, Goddard, Bennell, rookie, rookie (rookie, rookie)

Judd Magics players to consider -

Hodge
Malceski
McGovern
B.Smith
Laird
Langdon
Libba
Prestia
O'Meara
B.Crouch
Dangerfield
Beams
Priddis
Jacobs
Goldstein
Delidio
Dahlhaus
Zorko
Wingard
Bartel

Judd Magics 10 SC commandments....

1. Start forward line with all mid/forwards
2. Go guns and rookies. NO MID PRICERS, especially up back.
3. Go for as many back/mids or defenders that play in the midfield as possible in the backline.
4. Don't pick Swan mids, they steal points off each other.
5. Don't pick Tom Mitchell if he is playing at Swans still. Longmire hates him.
6. Don't EVER pick Hibberd or Griffen!
7. Make sure to start with a cheap 3rd ruck or a ruck/forward.
8. Try not to trade till at least round 8 so I can then make 2 trades every week to my hearts content.
9. Give an under performing player at least 4 weeks before giving them the flick. They may come good after a slow start.
10. Once a player gets injured twice in a season don't trade them back in .ie. Sloane, Rockcliff.

Judd Magics new 2016 trading strategy -

* If I make 2-3 trades before round 8 then I will look at this list and pick 2 rounds where I CANNOT trade!

Round 8 - 2 trades
Round 9 - 2 trades
Round 10 - 2 trades
Round 11 - 2 trades
Round 12 - 2 trades
Round 13 - 2 trades
Round 14 - 2 trades
Round 15 - 2 trades
Round 16 - 2 trades
Round 17 - 2 trades
Round 18 - 2 trades
Round 19 - 2 trades
Round 20 - 2 trades
Round 21 - 2 trades
Round 22 - 2 trades

This is a good starting point I think. I will keep referring to this list throughout next season.

Really farked up picking so many mid pricers in the backline that didn't work out except for Higgins.

Also traded a couple of players out too early without giving them more time .ie. Newnes, Miller.

Agree that mid pricers, unless fallen premo's due to injury are never really worth it. Yeah you might get one right, but for every one you get right you get 10 wrong, which is why I never pick them personally

No chance you can start 16 keepers though, and round 8 is pretty late to start trading too

10 is a commandment I will be going with too!

Nice post :)

Hah! Thanks RD.

Yeah realise that I might have to make a trim or two to my squad but that's the basis of what sort of team I want to start 2016 with.

I want to start with 4 back premos and at least 5 mid premos.

May need to get Prestia and Libba in for Pendles and Fyfe and a cheaper R2 to fit that team under the salary cap.  8)

Round 8 I will only start trading at if I have nailed all my rookies and I have no long term injuries.

If I use 2-3 trades before round 8 then I pick 2 rounds where I CANNOT trade. Most likely first bye round which is pointless to do trades in anyways and another round.

Think I have a pretty good trading plan worked out. I have never gone with a trading plan before so I think this will help.

Gigantor

"Don't try too hard to field 18 players every bye round"

Two of the trades I did during the byes netted me something bullshower like 50 pts and about 100k, they were always stupid trades but I panicked when I was looking at donuts :(

Nice work mate, hard to see us being able to have 16 prems starting but would be nice.
I like to build teams where im in need of around 8-10 to fill it. This will be an interesting thread
over the off season.

Yeah might be pushing it to get that starting team but like I said to RD I might downgrade Pendles and Fyfe to Prestia and Libba and downgrade my R2 to a cheaper ruck and then I might be able to get close to my starting team.

Could also go Malceski and Smith at D3 and D4 instead of Murphy and Simpson to get close to that starting team I want.

Yep yep certainly should be multiple options cheap next year to enable coaches to get an extra prem or two into their team.
I somehow can't help thinking SC will adjust prices accordingly to make it harder than it actually should be by not discounting as we would expect or think players should be priced at i have seen this before where players aren't discounted to where they should be under their guidelines.

NoButYeah

Every year I make the same mistakes and every year I ignore my previous mistakes. It's a vicious cycle.

Players I'll be looking at for mids will be Gaz, Rocky, Sloane, Jelwood, Libba, B Crouch, Prestia, O'Meara but I'd bet that I'll start with Gaz and pick at least 2 and they'll be the wrong 2. Could start with all of them if you were ballsy enough  ???

As for the rest of next years team, no idea. I'll worry about that in February  ;D

Love that midfield mate.

First 4 are keepers for sure.

Prestia should also be a keeper and maybe Libba.

Wont be hard to upgrade the rest.  8)

No. 8 might be relevant if you're going for league wins (never done it before so not sure), but i'd have to say that trading hard and trading early has contributed a lot to my success in the overall rankings this year and the last. I haven't started with strong teams in either year but getting premiums in quickly soon covered up any ground I may have lost

Also, a 3rd ruck or ruck/fwd is good in theory but not if his name is Bellchambers

The fact I ran out of trades this season I'll be picking players with a big emphasis on durability. So all these guys coming back from LTI's Ablett, Libba, O'Meara, Crouch, Prestia I won't be starting and will only trade them in when they suck me in with big scores and negative BE's and that's when they will get injured. Exactly like what just happened with Ablett this year lol. Goldy, Pendles, Rocky and probably Fyfe will be definite starters along with hopefully another 10 premiums, 15 rookies that get named (I so hope the sub rule gets abolished!) and then probably 1 mid pricer to use up the awkward kitty left.

MC

Some nice player picks, particularly the injured blokes like Crouch and Libba.

I disagree however with commandments #2 and #8...

#2 - Guns and Rookies
This commandment would have destroyed you this year, and many years in the past. The only reason this strategy was ever employed was when the GCS and GWS teams were fresh into the comp, providing us with reliable rookie-priced players.
Imagine this year you loaded up on 'guns' such as Selwood, Malceski, GAJ, Rocky etc... Season over.

#8 - No trades until Rd 8 if possible
This commandment is also going to flower you. It's of utmost importance that you get your rookies right in those first few rounds before they explode in price. A few corrective trades early helps to establish your cash base so that you can 'trade until your heart's content' after that. Imagine the scenario above where you banked on those premiums who aren't delivering. Do you carry them for half the season before cutting your losses?

Good luck anyway mate

My mate went just guns and rookies and he is ranked in the 400's overall as we speak.

He didn't start with Ablett, Malceski and Rockcliff though. Did start with Selwood however.

I also think if you have picked all the good rookies from the start then there's no need to start trading till about round 7-8 anyways except for a long term injury.
