Cal Twomey has reported that "It's understood (Charlie) Curnow has made it clear to several non-Victorian clubs throughout the season that he would not like to move interstate."

A fair few of the top prospects have done this over the last couple of years.

Word is Francis is trying his best to stay in Adelaide too.

For those that are wondering on Emma Quayles phantom draft.  Not a lot of of difference with Toomeys.

Will be interesting to watch live bidding as well.  Just read the rules again and if a team moves up the list the points value will equate to their new position eg If Sydney and GWS use their first or second round picks on Mills abbd Hooper Brisbane will the move up the order to 36 instead of 38. and gain extra ponts,

A team can also go into deficit next year to match as well but can not see too many doing it.

Bring on 6:30pm

This does shower me.
Like we always told my son if you are good enough to play AFL then you play where you can even if it means leaving home to another state.Simply because there are so many that want to play AFL, but just aren't good enough to make it at that level so you should be bloody grateful for the opportunity you have been given by a club no matter where they are.

If it were me, i'd be telling the recruiters that I wouldn't go to Perth. Only shower teams over there :P

Every draftee should be on an automatic 4 or 5 year contract wherever they end up and the club should be the only ones in control of weather they break that contract and trade them in that time frame (unless extreme circumstances where the player has to return home)
Too many ungreatful sooks around that should just be extremely greatful for playing at any AFL club. If they can't handle moving away from mummy then don't play AFL, simple as that

Draftees a becoming to self-righteous and arrogant (if I was a selector of any club I would pass on him based on his attitude alone)

Like Clayton Olivier's post "I'll take what I can get", that is the attitude these kids should have.

People from Vic Country normally couldn't give a shower :P Typical privileged City kids who whine about mummy being too far away.

You do not need mee to say 100% agree after Brisbanes go home.  Been banging on the fact that draftees should be given a minimum 3 year contract with 2 year options at clubs discretion,  This idea of players going where they want should stop but the AFL erred in the Port case instead of stepping in and saying you will go where you are drafted. Players know if they make these statements then clubs will be put off as they will go back anyway after 2 years.

Still do not think the academy bidding system is fair either as some clubs will probably not bid for them when they should thus still not realizing true value for academy picks.

It's a good point that the players disclose their wishes to prevent the club from making a bad decision and wasting two years of their time

However, the players don't have to be arrogant little brats and tell their wishes to the media as if the world is revolving around them. That is the worst aspect of the attitude problem

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but a simple case is Chad Wingard. He was a country SA boy who did not wish to move interstate. When interviewed by GWS and other clubs, he disclosed it and they respected his wishes - allowing him to slide to Port. He did not announce it to the Herald Sun or other media providers (as if he were some sort of monolith), and no-one was aware of this until the respective clubs stated it as the reason for passing on him years later.

Ringo

Wingard made it known to a number of clubs he would not leave SA and was reported in press.  Whther he or clubs leaked it do not know.

Cheers for the clarification  :)

I still don't think draftees should be making demands - they have no leverage

I think if you disclose it to the club, it should be frowned upon, however the worst thing a draftee could do is state to the media that he won't move interstate.

Like Leigh Matthews said, draftees are playing and competed to get drafted. They are not playing and competing to get drafted to their preferred club (the case obviously differs for academy players because they are brought up through that club and I guess F/S selection have the weaker argument of it's the family 'legacy').

good call. Pk

It would be tough for a rookie to crack into the WA teams given how elite they are. It would probably be easier to go over east and get a game earlier.

I guess the flip side is that if you do break in then its great and worse case they will develop you properly. Its all short term v long term goals.
