Swans aren't taking a risk. If they have 2179 points only pick 1 is worth more than that after the 20% discount. Even if a bid comes at pick 1 they can go into debt and make up the remaining points next year.
Forgot about the discount, all teams are golden then

Lions managed to snare picks 38-42 (after pick 2, this is where the bulk of their points are)
Yep and we are only in trouble if Keays or Hipwood go before 10.  We are right if they go 10 and 11 according to my calculations.

So the Draft Trumps series is back. Basically profiles 30 of the best prospect this year in no particular order.

First cab off the rank: Aaron Francis.

I'll be a little annoyed if Essendon draft two utilities... Hope we take one of Francis/Curnow and Balic seeing as Parish is now out of our reach (flowering Melbourne)

Francis is easily the best available at 4. Would rather get a KPF in Weid/Curnow this year and a midfielder next. Either way, pick 5 will probably go to a guy who isn't normally a top 5 pick but fills a need nicely.

2 of Parish/Francis/Curnow will no doubt be picked up by us presuming Weitering and Schache as exepected go pick 1 and 2.

Parish goes to Melbourne pick 3 you would think and then we take Francis and Curnow.

Curnow long term could well be a mid.

Francis' dream mentor would be Goddard, and I think the Bombers would be crazy to pass on him if they want an agile tall

29 days to go. Brother of Carlton player Ed, meet Charlie Curnow.

Is it at all possible to bank points?

Eg, nobody in the top 10 bid for Kennedy. GWS don't want to pick another player at 10 because they know if Kennedy gets bid on at 11, they'll then probably go into deficit in the first round of 2016. But if they take him at 10 they miss the 20% discount. So they "bank" the points that pick 10 is worth, and when he gets bid on at 11, they use those banked points. Remaining points upgrade a later pick a few places.

? Cheers

pretty sure FS and academy bidding is done before the actual draft. So they know coming into the draft if someone is going to take them at whatever pick :)

hate to disagree Zip but think that went out with the change to bidding.  All the information I have seen it is a live draft and when a bid is made clubs have to match it straight away so they do not know when their picks will come. Would be good if the old method continued but it is not.

Yeah the AFL is trying to make the draft more entertaining for viewers. Even if it means making it harder for everyone involved  :P

Who do they think is viewing? Just get on with the flogging draft so I can watch it like a football fan ::)

Is Matheison worth pick up 8? From what I've read he seems quite similar to Cripps!

You would want to snatch him up there if you were set on him

I would have him between 7-15 (really thought the Saints would get him with pick 5).

I see him falling out of the top 10 (will be a Cripps-Sheed positioned selection as a midfielder - contested machine but doesn't have the niche that the high order mids (well the 3-4 of them) possess)

Besides Hopper, Mills, Parish, & Kennedy, KPPs (plus the Curnow/Francis hybrid types) will dominate the top selections imo

I've got Maths a good as most mid tbh, expecting to go top 8 yeah. I don't want the crows to take him, call me scared :-[

Atm the moment I can only guess the top 5 picks

I would be willing to bet on these first five though;
1) Weitering
2) Schache
3) Parish
4) Francis
5) Curnow

After that it will depend on club needs. Curnow looks really good, could be anything between a Jobe Watson to a Jack Darling (depends whether Essendon want a tall mid in the long-term or support for Daniher).

If Bombers get those two it will be a 2nd straight nailing of the draft imo (Laverde, Langford, Francis, & Curnow over two years is an excellent return in terms of potential - and let's not forget Zac Merrett the year before)

I would say if a team wants Maths, they will need to use a top 10 pick. If they don't want him, he won't last long outside the top 10 (soon a team will use their pick and he will be the best player available). Gold Coast the only club I see needing him though - won't last until the Saints pick 14 (could see the Crows swoop in at pick 14 but don't see them using pick 9)
