"LEGENDARY Australian cricketer and commentator Richie Benaud has died at the age of 84 in Sydney.

Benaud passed away having undergone radiation treatment for skin cancer since late last year.

Benaud became one of the most familiar faces on Australian TV over the past five decades but was more famous for his brilliant, understated commentary and became affectionately known as the ‘voice of summer.’

He did not feature in Nine’s commentary team over the last two seasons but made an appearance at the network’s launch of their season in November, 2014.

The year before he suffered complications after crashing his Sunbeam Alpine on the way home from his regular golf game, suffering a broken sternum as well as shoulder and chest injuries.

Benaud became one of the leading figures of Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket revolution in the 70s giving the fledgling breakaway group the voice of authority it required.

As a leg-spinning all-rounder he played 63 Tests for Australia, scoring three centuries with his 2201 runs coming at an average of 24.45.

His 248 Test wickets came at an average of 27.03. As captain he reclaimed the Ashes in 1958/59 and then defended them twice."

Have deleted my post as well and posting my comments here

All of us fans will remember his commentary on channel 9 cricket.

Those of us a little older could remember his unrivalled captaincy of Australia. I was privilged enough to attend the tied test with the West Indies and this was my first encounter watching Richie.   He was a great all rounder and a real competitor in the days before sledging became part of the game.

He was a very knowledgeable commentator and his pairing with the late Tony Greig will always remain in my mind. Channel Nine really the poorer with the passing of these stalwards.

RIP Richie.

Such sad news.
Ricihie you were the voice of summer but you were also so much more to so many.
Your voice was missed this summer, cricket simply isn't the same with out the tone of your voice
and now it never will be. Some we wish could live forever, you were one of those.
The cricketing family has lost some gems in recent times, i pray your altogether now.
RIP Richie Benaud a legend in our time.

Such a sad day, hard to believe that Richie will never grace our screens again. He was as big a name as they come in cricket and such a big part of the sport, he will be sorely missed.

Been apart of the summer of cricket in my life for.... my life.

No more chew for chewhundred and chwenty chew or any more beige jackets in the commentary box.

A couple of my favourite Richie quotes

"He's usually a good puller - but he couldn't get it up that time."

"Well, Bruce Reid is not the worst batsman there is at international level ? but those who are worse would not need to hire the Myer Music Bowl to hold a convention."
