Sorry we brought Cooney in. Were thinking of a much better ladder position when the deal was done, for sure.

we gave up pick 37 for him, which Sydney used on a James Rose - don't think it's that detrimental of a move

Sydney have their own needs and you have yours, it is not likely you would have picked up Rose at that pick. Perhaps by giving up pick 37 you missed out on Caleb Daniels?
I think Cooney did hog a starting spot that could have been used to blood some youth, especially once the chance for finals was gone. Could have been worse though, at least pick 37 isn't tooooo high.

kilbluff1985

man i'd love Daniel over Cooney

I really don't blame them for the list management choices. Based off last years performance and gaps, they were completely justified in what they went for. But we'll see what happens this year now we've got picks.

It is. It's detrimental to the team to bring in a player in the twilight of his career and pretend we have an obligation to play him in the senior team at the expense of other young talent. To take a gamble on a young player who, at worst case scenario, would have been in the VFL out of the way and delisted in two years has comparatively no effect on the team.

Nige

Chappy to have a farewell game against Richmond this week and retire after it.

QuoteEssendon’s Irish recruit Conor McKenna will make his senior debut on Saturday night against Richmond.

The 19 year old travelled from Tyrone in Northern Island to Tullamarine at the end of last year for a shot at making it in the AFL.

“It’s great reward for the hard work he’s put in,” Essendon Development Coach Paul Corrigan said.

“He’s obviously crammed a lot in the time that he’s been here.

“He does more sessions than anyone else, he never misses a beat.”

While most Irish players are used off the half-back line, McKenna has shown some natural flair in front of goal.

In his 15 VFL games this season, he’s kicked 18 goals.

“The coach took me in yesterday about three o’clock after training,” McKenna said.

“Cora, who has been working with me all year, he just said ‘congratulations, you’re playing against Richmond this week’.

“It’s just good to get a role now.”

McKenna's signature was highly sought after because of his elite speed, athleticism and endurance.

He grew up playing Gaelic football and has spent extra time with Essendon’s development coaches learning the finer points of the game.

“In defence, it was not too bad, but then I went forward and the structure of the game is just hard to get used to but hopefully I’ll get it right now and come Saturday it’ll come to plan,” he said.

McKenna’s parents are flying out from Tyrone to attend Saturday night's match.

same, kids gonna be a super star! can't get much better for an 18yo B-Rookie to get an AFL game season 1. You'd think 3 years minimum before a senior call up.

Would actually leave our rucks as they are if Bellchambers finds his dick and a better attitude.
