Is Hogan really a must?

I am not that certain of his JS to be honest.  If he keeps getting hammered he may need games for Casey to build his confidence.  A 20 year old key forward does not guarantee JS in my opinion.
He's literally the messiah for Melbourne, he'll play every game if he isn't injured.

Getting hammered?

As long as he is either marking it or bringing it to the feet of Garlett/JKH/Kent he will have a spot in the team

Set up some nice opportunities as well last night

It shows he has the potential to be more than just a full forward - he can push up the ground

Besides, that wasn't even the main point - Did you even read the first part of what I said?

A Melbourne supporter just gave you the most important reason to pick him and you're not convinced? Have fun when your forward bench rookies aren't named.  8)

He still maybe in my side.  All I am saying is that I am not convinced of his JS as some on here.

Cheers Mat, look forward to seeing it because at this stage I'm seeing very little upside in starting him ahead of some of these other guys

So this is what I wrote last night in regards to similar rookies that you named

But of those guys you listed, Krak and Lambert still need to get elevated and in Kraks case even if he does he probably still won't get a game. Heeney has to break into arguably the best midfield in the league and Steele has to compete with the plethora of mids/smalls at GWS which means he is a vest candidate as well. It gives you 15-30k in the initial price to bring in someone that has a chance of starting in green or might not even get games whereas Melbourne need and want to play Hogan every single week

Now if we are also talking Karnezis he will be lucky to get into the Pies 22, same goes with Laverde at the Dons unless there are suspensions and what happens when all the first come back? Ahmed Saad averaged 46 in his last season of footy and is pricier then Hogan. His job security makes him a perfect F7 candidate for when a player misses an early game or someone gets the vest

This is what I wrote in regards to rookie scoring and our expectation being too high

Quote from: Mat0369 on March 07, 2015, 02:13:53 PM
Being realistic I am expecting a 60-70 average at best from Salem. There are no forward rookies that are going to come out and average 80+ a game that start the year

The popular picks last season of Rohan, Impey, Ambrose, Z Merrett, Lewis Taylor all averaged the following

50, 48.6, 56.8, 63.7, and 63.5.

If you go back 2 seasons, you have Caff and Dwyer were both popular and averaged 59.6 and 68.1 a piece

You might have some decent downgrade options later in the year like McGovern or Turner, but the guys that generally start won't go more then 70 more often then not.

So if at his worst Salem can score a 40 I will take that. He uses the ball so well which is good for SC and he will have a couple of big games to bump that average back up into the 60 range and generate cash quickly when he does score well. Throw in his good job security and he is worth the cash compared to someone like Karnezis who has questionable job security and has burnt me in the past.

Now with Hogan I think the expectations are a bit high. I am thinking a 50 average is realistic with a few 40-60 scores each week. He is going to be the main focal point in that forward line inside 50 with Dawes pushing up the field which could result in a couple of 80-100 odd scores to give him a nice price rise. Even at a 50 average on the season he should go up 150k

barlowlove

Players who averaged 55 last year and aren't discounted are priced at right around $300k. Sit him on your bench, he'll be a slow burn to around that price at Rd13 where you can upgrade him right before his bye

Locked

quinny88

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Still not convinced he is such a lock but he's in my side atm.
JS only lasts as long as you play well and if all the guys I mentioned are named round 1 then it's their spot to lose, so assuming none of them will cement a spot could hurt a few teams

GoLions

Key him in and throw away the lock!

Jroo

Don't think he's a massive lock like some of you think. But you still have to pick him,  he has great JS and is cheap, so I'll chuck him on the bench.

cortez

is a lock for me, will be him and Dawes up front, and if they did decide to drop him who do they have that can come in and play his role?

Probably Cam Pedersen but I would assume they will persist with Hogan unless he's just getting mauled every week

Holz

If your going 3 rookies in field you need him for the security. If your going 2 i can see better scoring options but I would still get him.

3 rookies is the way to go so lock him in.
