I'm looking for a D3 at around 460k. I've been keen on Michael Johnson lately but injuries is the only thing not making me lock him in. Current Defense is: Simpson, Shaw, _______, Newnes, Geary, Whitecross/rookie. Thoughts??

FactHunt

You could do worse than Johnson.
but Hurn is this price range, Fisher, Yarran, Harbrow, even Thompson if you back him to return to his 2013 form

Ricochet

Hurn or Lumumba would be my picks mate

Hurn or Lumumba. Without his injury affected score of 7, Hurn averaged 91.6 last season, 0.2 SC points higher than Hibberd but is 24k cheaper. I have both at the moment.

As for Lumumba, I just have a good feeling about the Prince this season. Will get much more midfield time at Melbourne and scored over 100 in both his NAB games so far.

I had Hurn in my team but have taken him out pending NAB3 - just want to see how/where he plays with MacKenzie out. Not sure who exactly would take over MacKenzie's role (McGovern?) and if Hurn is at all affected. (Happy for thoughts on that if people have them!)

Houli looks in the best shape I've ever seen him, played a terrific game last week complete with some fine aerial work. Can see him nudging 90 this year. He's also super durable, rarely misses matches whereas Hurn routinely gets hurt (usually at the beginning of matches).

I've seen you mention Houli a few times Bully, he's definitely caught my attention.

Do you reckon he could improve on his average? Dropped off slightly last year, but is there any room for him to improve to around 95?

Been in my side at D4 for a few weeks, and his selection was justified last weekend. Locked in. I have James Kelly in my team atm, but am not totally sold yet.

They can't all improve at Richmond. Martin, Conca, Vlastuin, Ellis still on the way up.

In this specific price range I'd say there is 5 guys I would consider

Hurn, Fisher, Houli, Newnes and Lumumba

I currently have Fisher (Locked for me) and have just bought in Lumumba

I had Hurn locked for quite a while, but with EMac getting injured and Waters and Glass retiring I just need to see how he goes this week because I am now a little hesitant. He represents great value for money though

In reality though, we could throw a blanket over all the 400k+ defenders. No idea who's going to step up at be Top6-10 this year

This has actually been a real sticking point for me, as I think I'm picking guys I believe can score above their price point, but may not necessarily fall into the top defenders for the year... Damn there being no decent rookies!

I mean, let's say you pick 2 or 3 guys like Lumumba, Newnes, Hurn, and they all average ~90, but the top 10 defenders are averaging 95 or better. 5 ppg isn't much but when it's x3 players, 10-15 points less every round in defense alone is worth worrying about if you're having a serious tilt at overall I would've thought...

Harry Taylor would be my pick at that price. Got the running coach helping with his 2 left feet and has looked good in the pre-season. Could play hat loose role with Lonergan and Rivers on the KPPs and can at times go forward and kick goals.

Doesn't generally get rested either.

RaisyDaisy

Some people are starting with 5 premo defenders, some with 3 or 4 plus mid pricers

Either way, I think we need to get comfortable with the idea that if we want to have the best 6-8 defenders this year then the reality is a few sideway trades are going to have to be burnt, unless you get seriously lucky and pick the right ones from the get go
