The West Coast Eagles medical staff will delay a call on the availability of key defender Will Schofield until later in the week.

Schofield, subbed out of the game against Sydney on Sunday with a sore calf, will undergo treatment throughout the week before a decision is made on whether he will travel to the Gold Coast on Thursday.

While he will be closely monitored, the medical staff is happy with the progress of fellow key defender Jeremy McGovern, who strained a hamstring against Collingwood 11 days ago.

He will miss this week’s game against Gold Coast, but is a chance to play on Saturday week against leading premiership contender Hawthorn.

Unfortunately, another key position player in Fraser McInnes is facing a long stint on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring strain in East Perth’s 106-point victory over South Fremantle.

He had exerted a strong influence on the game with four goals before limping to the bench.

The club is continuing to assess the injury, but it appears he is set for an extended period of recovery, between eight to 10 weeks.

If good to go, would love to get Jezza back for the Hawks

If Schoey needs a rest this week then that's fine too. Really want us to be primed and in a position to have a red hot crack at Hawthorn

Will Nic Nat be rested against the GC?

Butler to come back in?

Maybe if Schoey is out otherwise no unless someone else gets dropped since Ellis is doing fine playing that position atm

Even with the long trip to the Gold Coast??

I would actually like to see West Coast rest a few guys to give them an extra week at home without travel to face Hawks and Freo when they get back.  I'd rest Nic Nat, give Lycett a game with Sinclair to see what they can do in tandem, I also wouldn't bring back McGovern this week like they are saying, got plenty of guys they can give a run to like Nelson, Bennell, Butler and another run for Barrass and even Lamb.

Agreed, happy to rest a few this week

Key West Coast Eagles defender Jeremy McGovern has taken the first steps towards a return for the match of the round against Hawthorn at Domain Stadium on Saturday night.

McGovern enjoyed a light session today, but will ramp it up over the next few days as he strives to make it back to offer support to Will Schofield and Tom Barrass in defence against the highly-rated Hawks.

McGovern's magnet ready: Simpson

He has missed the past two games with a hamstring strain, has ticked all the medical boxes in the last week and will now make a run at a return against the club that has won the last two premierships.

The Eagles came out of the weekend with an otherwise clean bill of health, with no injuries to report from the draw with Gold Coast or the thrilling victory by East Perth over West Perth in the WAFL.

Midfielder Chris Masten received a knock to the knee, but the club’s medical team is confident he will come up after a managing him through the week, while ruckman Cal Sinclair has shown no effects from jarring his knee in the first quarter against the Suns.

Schofield, who had a sore calf going into that game, should be clear to play.

Unfortunately, the season looks over for two young, emerging players â€" midfielders Damien Cavka and Alec Waterman.

Cavka will have surgery on a troublesome ankle while Waterman continues to battle glandular fever and other than a remarkable recovery will probably sit out the remainder of the season.

As at August 4, 2015

Cavka (ankle) season
Duggan (knee) season
Mackenzie (knee) season
Tunbridge (shoulder) season
Waterman (ill) ongoing
