Hutchy had groin issues, they've backed off his training twice this pre-season. Shame, I was hoping he would come in and tag allowing Scooter/Welly to attack.

XAVIER Ellis has been ruled out of West Coast's round one clash with the Western Bulldogs, but Mitch Brown and Will Schofield should be available if they get through training this week.

Both Ellis and Brown injured hamstrings against Port Adelaide in the NAB Challenge clash on March 8.

Brown completed his rehab program last week and should be ready to go, but West Coast physiotherapist Paul Tucker told the Eagles’ website on Tuesday that the club was being more cautious with Ellis.

"He (Ellis) has been in rehab for the last few weeks like Browny, but we're probably taking a slightly more conservative approach with Xavier," Tucker said.

"He will join main training next week and hopefully be available going into round two."

Ellis completed some running during the Eagles' light skills session at Domain Stadium on Monday afternoon and appeared to be moving reasonably well.

Will Schofield injured his ankle earlier in the pre-season and missed all three NAB Challenge matches. But he has re-joined main training this week and is expected to be available for selection to face the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

There was also some positive news on Mark Hutchings and Jack Darling. Both have been in long-term rehab over the summer.

Hutchings has returned to full training following ongoing problems with his groin.

Darling is still on track for a possible return to the senior side in round five or six. Tucker said the forward was still a couple of weeks away from joining main training as he continued his slow recovery from a foot stress fracture.

But Darling was out on Domain Stadium on Monday. He worked away from the main group doing some low intensity leading, marking and kicking.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson told AFL.com.au last week that the Eagles could have up-to three debutants in the first month with Tom Lamb, Jackson Nelson and Liam Duggan all in contention to play as early as this week.

Lamb and Nelson played every pre-season game for West Coast.

Duggan has played the first two matches of the WAFL season for East Perth and has been very impressive. The first-round draft pick gathered 22 disposals and kicked two goals for the Royals last Saturday.

Brown’s knee buckled midway through the first quarter of West Coast’s clash with the Bulldogs on Saturday night and he was taken from the field on a stretcher.

WATCH: Brown injures knee

An MRI has confirmed that the 26-year-old will require a second reconstruction on his left knee, which he first injured in 2008 during a pre-season match against Collingwood.

A decision is yet to be made on whether Brown will opt for the LARS treatment or go down the traditional route.

Brown will join fellow backman Eric Mackenzie on the sidelines, after the 2014 Worsfold medallist suffered a similar injury in the club's first NAB Challenge fixture.

Vice-captain Josh Kennedy delivered the news to the media this afternoon and said that Brown has maintained a positive attitude.

"It’s a confirmed ACL which is disappointing for us and for Mitch," Kennedy said.

"I think the scans came back last night and confirmed it.

"He’s done it before and now he’s going down that same path again.

"It’s sad, it’s football, it’s a part of it.

"Brownie’s been through it before and... on the way back [from Melbourne] he was high-spirited about it all."

Not nice (fair) when sportsman have their careers dictated by injury. Sad for Brown, hope he comes back stronger

A brace of senior players, who have not been available for NAB Challenge matches or the opening round of the AFL season, are pushing to be available in the next couple of weeks.

Experienced defender Xavier Ellis, ruckman-forward Callum Sinclair and hard-nosed midfielder Mark Hutchings are on the cusp of a return.

Ellis is likely to be available for selection, after straining as hamstring in NAB2 against Port Adelaide, while Sinclair has recovered from a fractured finger, sustained in the opening match of the pre-season campaign against Carlton.

Hutchings has been battling groin soreness in the back end of the pre-season, but has also been listed as available.

Unfortunately, with East Perth having a bye in the WAFL this weekend, the timing is not ideal, but he should benefit from an additional week.

Developing midfielder Alec Waterman, who missed last weekend’s round of fixtures with a low grade quad strain, should also be ready to resume after the Royals’ bye and wingman Dylan Main is likely to play in the fifth round of WAFL action.

Draftee Damien Cavka is making good progress from a stress reaction in his foot, while star forward Jack Darling has looked good in the early phase of a running program.

Brown (knee) season
Mackenzie (knee) season
Cavka (foot) indefinite
Darling (foot) 5 weeks
Main (back) 1 week
Hutchings (groin) test
Sinclair (finger) test
Waterman (groin) test
Ellis (hamstring) available

A visit to a Perth hand specialist has confirmed that young forward Murray Newman will miss the next two months with a finger tendon injury.

Newman damaged the finger playing for East Perth on Good Friday and will require surgery. His hand will be in a moulded cast for the next six weeks before he can resume training.

The injury comes after Newman produced an outstanding performance in East Perth’s strong win over Subiaco, kicking four goals in a resolute team performance
