GEELONG is about to secure Tom Hawkins on a four or five-year deal but will be forced to wait on opening contract talks with livewire midfielder Steve Motlop.

Free agent Hawkins will again discuss his contract with his representatives this week, with a resolution near on a long-term deal.

He has spoken of his desire to get his playing future sorted soon with the 26-year-old set to sign the most lucrative deal of his career.

But Motlop, so critical for the Cats given the loss of Allen Christensen and Travis Varcoe, is happy to build a solid base of home-and-away footy before talks get underway.

As he did in his last contract he will focus on his footy despite the club’s determination to lock him away early in the year.
