Who would you rather?

What do people think and why? Not getting on a bandwagon for geary, was already considering him before NAB1 and he actually was in my team the first team I made but had since been relegated for others.

yeh thats what my brain is telling me but for some reason I really like Wells + Geary and think they will outscore Kelly and NVB by a fair bit, even though 2 mid pricers vs a keeper and a rook sounds silly.

Yeh i agree, If i do it Im basically backing geary to turn into a premo and then ill happily turn wells into a super premo when he maxs out

I'd go Wells and Geary, I can't afford them both with my current set up but I would take them if I could.  prior to last year Wells was going high 90s/early 100s so could potentially turn into an M8 keeper if he can retunr to low 100s. Geary like you I've been a fan of since first making my team and I reckon he can improve on past seasons scores but even if not he should make some cash.

I in some ways think the opposite, Kelly if he gets back to mid 90s could be a keeper but not really if he goes 85-90 like last two years. I think he's declining so I think there's as much risk picking Kelly as Wells as far as the keeper stakes are concenred, and it's also a wash with Geary vs NVB as I think you'd need to trade either, so I think trades are actually probably neutral between the pairings so I would pick the ones scoring more points from day 1.

I'm not very confident in Wells going more than 90, so I guess it's up to each individual there. So in my case, Wells is ~15-20ppg behind a M8 keeper, and Kelly at 85-90 I'd be happy with as a keeper considering the defence options this year.

Geary I'll be watching throughout the rest of the NAB.

I went for Kelly & NVB.

I think Kelly will be a keeper, 90 average and Scott has said he and Bartel will get more mid time this year which may well push his average to 95-100 which will be keeper status for defence this year. NVB has plenty of cash to make and good job security so plenty of upside there.

The Wells/Geary combo may well produce more points but there's a bigger risk involved, if it doesn't work and it will take a few trades to correct both positions. Both should at the very least make some cash but it will take a minimum of 2 trades to upgrade both if they don't hit keeper status where as I'm fairly confident Kelly will be a keeper.

So purely from a risk/trades burned point of view I'd go with Kelly & NVB but that's the safe option and you need to take some risks to do well in SC.

I'll be taking a couple of risks in the backline this year so won't be taking any in the midfield at the start of the season.

All logical reasoning there PiPies and I too will be taking some risks in the backline but feel like the Wells + Geary combo could be well worth a punt and like you said, you gotta take some punts if you want to do really well. Personally, I think Wells can definitely go 100+ this year and even though Kelly has been ''promised'' more midfield time it just doesnt make sense for Geelong to not blood their younger talent through the midfield for most of the season, and this makes me worry he might slip back to the 85 average area.

NVB scoring ability doesnt excited me very much at all but thats just me personally, assuming there are plenty of mid rookies I think id be happy not having NVB if it meant having Wells at M5 and Geary at D6, which could give me a good points boost early on in the season. But it could also backfire of course!

mainly because that 150-200k saving doesnt really help my structure, it doesnt turn a rookie into a premium

150k is too much.

You couldn't use that 100k or so to upgrade some of your premiums to super premiums? Maybe put a 200kish ruck on the bench if one of them pops up? Maybe start 2 200k rookie mids instead of one?

Perhaps if a decent ruck cover option comes up that could be an option, but otherwise I dont see where that 150k can help me, keeping in mind I like Wells scoring potential and am content to trade him later on. It only a flop if both wells and geary score terribly

I agree that the Cats will be blooding their younger guys but they'll need a chop out from time to time and hopefully that's where Kelly and Bartel step in. I'll be taking the punt on Kelly and possibly Geary depending on how the defense options pan out over the next few weeks. I also agree that NVB's scoring won't set the world on fire but he's not meant to be performing his run with roles this year which should help a bit. He will take a while to find his feet regardless after such a long break. The reason I'm sold on him is with such a low price he will make some decent cash and probably has the best job security of all the rookie priced players.

If Wells does go 100+ you will have got him for a steal, hope it works out for you.

Get rid of Minson. There's one spot you can use the cash. Turn Rainbow into Brown for better coverage. Biggs to cheaper rookie and Wells into Premo? Even Ibbo/Geary to WhiteX if not enough cash to get that premo

There are always plenty of options. Just go with your gut and do what you feel is right :)
