Yes I have this in place

I'm a strong believer of the GnR approach, and don't want to muck around with any of the 200-400k players people have been talking about because I don't think any of them will be keepers and will need to be traded so I don't want to waste my time with them

It might get me off to a slightly slower start but long term it should serve me well

I didn't keep either of Higgins or Suckling last year, but they were still very good picks. I'm hoping Yeo and BC can be similar types of players to those two

Currently have 8 defenders under $436,801  ;)

Good luck with that lol

Potentially means that all your defence needs upgrading to premos if they don't preform, meaning using 6 trades pre injuries
I have no issue with this strategy.  There are no standout premium must have defenders this year.  In the past we have had delidio, goddard, gibbs, mcviegh, players who we have locked in as premos.  Whos to say the sub $436k defenders don't become premos in the same fashion as Brodie Smith and Mathew Jaensch did last year.  Whos to say the premos wont drop like Scotty T and Ibbotson did last year.  This could be a very good strategy.  More cash will be available to spend on premium mids, rucks and forwards and there is nothing to say you have to start with an even mix of premiums on each line.  It all depends on the players available on each line.

Every year there are players who break out, just as there are players who regress. However, if you can pick each year's break out players, you are better than 99.99% of Supercoach players already. The reality is, it's just too risky. I'd rather pick guys like Simpson, Hurn, Shaw and Hibberd who have a history of consistent high scoring for their position. Players who are much less likely to regress like Thompson and Ibbotson did last year.

The problem as I see it with starting 5 premos is you're only leaving yourself 1 spot to upgrade. So if 2 or 3 or 4 guys shoot up to be top 6 (which often happens) you don't have room to get them in without burning a sideways trade.

I agree the lack of quality rookies means stacking the backline is the way to go but just think 5 is too many.

This. Not to mention when a top backman gets an early concussion and ends up at $400k, ala Hurn, Hanley, SMitchell etc. last year. Spend the money on safety now and save money later when better bargains appear.

I have played around with my structure a few times and went 5 premo defenders earlier and hated it. I am playing with my structure again and had a whole bunch of free cash and decided to upgrade my D5 to Birchall. I still don't like it....

I have 5 as well but will probably downgrade one to bring in some 200k rookies(Acres, De Goey, Biggs, Brayshaw etc) I'm not overly confident on guys like Krak and Lambert starting round one.

The_Captain

I think 4 and a mid pricer is fine. 5 probz pushing it a bit....

Call me crazy but I'm currently going with 2 premiums, 1 mid-price and 3 rookies. Of course, I have a contingency plan in place for when the round one teams are named and 4 out of my 5 rookies aren't named :S

Might as well activate that plan now  :P

The point raised about picking 5 now and then only having 1 spot left and potentially missing out on better defenders is completely valid, and hard for me to counter, but I cant see myself changing it unless I see some really good stuff from some mid pricers during the NAB, and hopefully we do

5 Premo Defense = better luck next year  ;D

plumdog millionaire

Putting any more than 4, maybe even 3, low end premium defenders gives you such little room for error when you consider poor form, injuries and changes in individual roles that will generally require valuable trades... Not only this, but as stated before, you leave yourself with little room for the bolters that come out from under the radar, like Jaensch was last year (To me at least haha)

Don't want to make a thread, but what are people's thoughts on a 2 Premo fwd lind? The rokkies are very strong this year.

Franklin, Swan, Salem, Clark, Hogan, Karnezis Steele/Daniel/Krak/Lambert
