I've played around n even with more premium defenders I havnt been happy with my backline. I'm happy with my other lines and will probably do something I never usually do and that's mid priced madness in defense. I know it will probably cost me trades.

Think of 2 prems like shaw & Hibberd.

Then 3 mid pricers - atm have Ibbotson/Vlastuin/Savage although KK does interest me. Will watch these mid pricers over nab as well as seedsman and yeo. Very risky I know and I still have to hope for a rookie to play for this to work. I was tempted to drop a mid n upgrade but no confidence who to upgrade those mid pricers to.

My mids atm r 4 super prems and 1 prem then rookies.

I think the cost in terms of trades is overstated a little, let's say you pick 4 mid pricers and 1 or perhaps 2 average 90, that would mean 2 upgrades and 1 rookie cull in all probability. The top 6 is so uncertain and you may even find other supposed premiums dropping and having to be traded anyway. Out of Lumumba, Newnes, Fisher, Houli, Higgins, Yeo, Ibbo and Vlastuin I think there will be several who move into the top tier. Remember Ellis 2 seasons ago? Strange things can happen.

LordSneeze

Currently I have Newnes & Macmillian, but waiting to see what happens in Nab Cup

I currently have 3 of these players.

I think at least 85% of us will change our D5/D6 before season starts. It's too hard to tell if rookie backs will play, wait and see after nab cup and hopefully out langfords/langdons pop up. Hoping to start 2 rookies on field!

Newnes and Lumumba atm.

:o Strong defence - I take it you're running 4/1/3 on the other lines?

it seems to change by the hour and am strugglimg with the cheapness of the rucks and forwards. The only way I can see Lumumba in my team is for him to be D6, but I'll get there, allways do in the end.

RaisyDaisy

I've had this guy on my watchlist just quietly all pre-season but now I'm sure a lot more will be aware of him now after he booted 6 in the intra club today

Matthew "Head" Watson

Played 3 games last season for an average for 80, and is only 298k plus DEF/FWD

He played Rd23 last year against Essendon, booted 4 and tonned up in SC

If he is in Micks plans and cements a spot in the 22 this guy is a genuine option for those looking for a cheap defender to replace Waters

I'm just not a fan of this guy. It's not the fact that his head is ridiculously too large for his body, but it's the fact that he appears lost in contests and seems not to be able to read the play. Hopefully I'm wrong

His big head and short arms made for a terrible defender.

He is competing for a spot with Jones at the moment and I think he gets it. I still wouldn't touch him in SC

I must confess to not following this guy's career very closely.  Why only 19 games in 4 years?  Is he injury prone, just not good enough, or slow to mature? I remember that game last year, UGH! Cursed him all night.

If you go the more expensive mid pricers I agree - but the only sub $350k player to average 90 over the last 2 years has been Jaensch.  90 may be aiming too high this year but not many of them over the same period made 80+.

So how's everybody's D5 and D6 looking at the moment?

Right now I have C Pearce and MacMillan. I am not usually one for midpricers but I think that this is the year to go with a few and the backline is easily the best place to do so.

AaronKirk

Right now Geary and Clancee are D5 and D6 but this is bound to change many times in the next few weeks

Ricochet

My thoughts on Clancee which I've posted a few times, but for what it's worth

Has been a lock all preseason, the worry with him is JS and vest.
Freo supporters might be able to shed some light on this.

I was asking about this about a month back and Rico mentioned he didn't look like he would fit in the best 21 because of structure although he might be there in terms of talent. If Duff misses extended time it looks like he might find a way in.
Yep pretty much.  I would have him in my 22 every day of the week because of his elite kicking and he'sa natural ball magnet. Reality is he's about 18-25. So when Fyfe and Ibbo come back in next week keep an eye on Clancee's role. One thing he has got going for him atm is that Ross rewards boys that do the hard work and Clancee came back to preseason a lot fitter after doing a lot of work away from the club, which he needed to do after dropping the ball in that area last year

Also add in DPearce and Crowley into that side (along with Fyfe and Ibbo), pushing CPearce a bit further down again
