Well if it wasn't for the academies Heeney and co wouldn't be playing AFL today  ::)

Why hasn't this been discussed until now?

Because the people opposed to it only want to make noise about the things that support their argument.

They neglect to mention how long Heeney, Mills and most of the guys have been part of the program (around 4-5years)

Working with AFL coaches, trainers, support etc. That is the other part that is always left out. If these guys werent in the system with the support around them it is unlikely their skills, talent and ability would have been as fast tracked

Know I have been vocal on this issue but I have re read the article and think if discounts are calculated right then it may even up both academy and Father/son. Maybe work the discount on finishing positions of the year.

AK The difference with Victoria and AFL states is AFL is taught in the schools from a young age which is not the case in Qld and NSW as you would know and academies were set up to identify talent and give the specialised training with coaches etc,

Because they only want it to the point where they're "promoting growth" outside AFL states without really doing it

I think all the clubs will argue that 25% for the academy and 15% for F/s doesnt seem right.

So what happens if 2 teams go for a FS player?

Cant wait for everyone to have a go at Collingwoods next FS

This.

It would flower up the idea of father son selection.

What happens when the team paying for the FS recruit is owed points?

Like, is it possible, that after the 15% or 25% discount, that their next pick is actually worth more than that deducted figure?

The pick just doesnt go all the way back to the end of the draft. Might go from rnd 3 to rnd 5 till the points add up

I mean like, what if GWS had pick 2, and they had an academy selection bidded on at pick 1.

So, 3000 points - 25% deduction which is 2250 points.

Pick 2 is worth 2517, so if they used Pick 2 on the academy selection, then they would have overpayed 267 points. Probably won't happen, but it could.

So if the Swans had to give up the first 3 picks for Heeney, then would the Dees get them? Who gets the picks? If the first 3 picks is more than required then will the dees have to give up a later pick?

I can see whom ever has the first pick next year going for the best FS or academy player and picking up all these picks as well as the first pick they were actually after

Good question, now I understand what you meant.

Big call for the team with pick 1 to do it I guess but you would have to assume it would get banked for the next time they need it? if they are going to possibly allow you to knock points into following years, then the same would be for positive points as well?
