Jack Steven.

When it comes to looking for value picks, Steven is a very interesting proposition this year. We saw in 2013 that he can score like a premium mid when he averaged 110.

His season last year was wrecked by the serious foot injury that he sustained in the pre-season and then a stress reaction in his thigh towards the end of the season.

From all reports, he is fully fit now and looks as though he will complete a full pre-season so I wonder whether he will be able to get back to scoring like a premium this year.

I guess the only worrying thing is he may cop a bit of extra attention with Hayes retiring but the opposition may not decide to tag at all because the Saints are that bad.

Priced at just $455,900 he is extremely good value.

Thoughts?

Risky and a no from me. A few years back Montagna and Dal Santo averaged 115+ in Saints colours too. I'd be more confident of him scoring well if he had support, received less attention and the team was winning. Steven is likely to be one of the many midfielders going around that is irrelevant IMOIn a team that is going to belted most weeks it is probably better to avoid their midfielders. The Saints I select will be in defence or rookies..

Too quick to tag!
He's not a 110 player, more like 105. He had his average boosted in 2013 by playing Freo when they weren't trying so he and Joey went huge and launched themselves up the rankings.

I just don't take risks in the midfield. he could be a good player but he wont come close to the top 8 and he isnt cheap enough for me.

Still not a terrible pick just doesn't fit my game style.

If i was to tag Stkilda he would be the guy i would go after and with a side that will push for the spoon not sure he is worth the risk.

He's spot on.
No need to take risks in the Midfield.

Saying Holz is spot on is like saying the pope is Catholic.  ;)

As above.

Oh, and a terrible bye round, too.

Very good point. I keep forgetting that the Saints have the round 12 bye!

Indeed. It was much better last year!

Crappy bye aside, you would still be crazy not to look at him. The guy is a gun and with a delayed start to the season he was always going to score poorly.
