Midfield: Players v Structure

This thread could have gone in the Strat section, but I wanted to discuss players too

Each year we discuss what Midfield strategy to go with, and I'd like to discuss it now that we have a 9th spot in the line

Having looked through so many teams there seems to be a lot of options people are going with this year

5 Super Premiums and Rookies
4 Super Premiums plus Mid Pricer (Eg Rich)
4 Super Premiums plus NVB and Rookies

They seem to be the main 3, but what do we think is the right way to go? Obviously by going with 4 it allows you to go stronger on another line, and ultimately the goal is to get 22 Premiums on the park anyway, but it always comes down to how many rookies are available come rd1, so I know we can just wait until rd1 to discuss this, but I want to hear about peoples reasoning for going with the mid structure they have decided on so far, and what the benefits are for their overall team by doing it

I've personally gone with 5 Super Premiums and Rookies at this stage, but I'm starting to think I need to squeeze NVB into my line up. I know he isn't a great scorer, but he should average the same as rookies and has the JS that most of them don't, so I'm wondering if I should change to a 4 Super Premium and NVB structure, which will allow me to go stronger in the rucks or forward line

Finally, I want to touch on the fact that we now have 3 mid bench spots. I think it's fair to say M9 in particular wont need to be relied on. Do we put a rookie there who might be in and out of the team, being a slow cash cow, or do we grab a DPP Floating donut? Perhaps a D/M rookie giving more flexibility and another Captain Loophole option?

A lot of speculation at this stage I know, but I guess this is what the pre-season is for :D

i reckon 5 premos and NVB is a goer. At this stage anyway.. pending if we can get a few rooks up front and down back to start round 1.

Good post RD. It's interesting to see what everyone goes with. At this moment I have 4 premo, NVB, Brayshaw and rookies. But most likely the week before the season I will have the usual brain pain and will pick some random Premo to get the early runs on the board.

I think my midfield may depend a lot on my backline. If some of the cheaper options like Seedsman, Waters, etc are looking good in the pre-season, I'll be picking them and that will hopefully allow me to have 5 premium mids. However, if for example Waters doesn't get up round 1 and there aren't enough decent back rookies, I'll probably have to squeeze out some more cash for another premium defender and drop a premo mid to a Wells/Rich/Rookie.

NVB is just about locked for me, for the reasons you stated RD, even if I have 5 premos.

And with M9, I'll still be trying to fit in the best rookie available. We've essentially been given the chance to make an extra 200k or so early in the season, why not take it? I can see the merit in a DPP floating donut, however I would prefer to do this later on in the year, perhaps after the byes.

Currently deploying the 4 Premium/NVB/6 Rookies midfield structure.

1 super premo for me. I'd prefer A. Swallow, Wells and Wallis over 2 premos and a rookie who won't play or be a spud scorer and vest wearer.

5 Mids at $600k+ as well as Rich, NVB and 4 rookies. Value every other line
