When a positive illicit drug test is not a strike

POSITIVE illicit drug tests under the AFL's code are not being counted as strikes if players are in treatment from a club or league doctor.

It is believed this scenario could occur whether a player has recorded none, one or two strikes - so long as he has been withdrawn from playing.

They regain eligibility to record strikes only when they are passed fit to play.

In an address at an anti-doping conference in Zurich last November, AFL chief medico Dr Peter Harcourt said three players had retired and a further three had been temporarily withdrawn because of drug problems.

AFL players have volunteered to be tested under the illicit drugs policy since 2005, but no player has tested positive a third time.

Smeh, it's a logical rule. If they've withdrawn from the game and are undergoing treatment to get over an addiction, it'd be pretty harsh (maybe not necessarily unfair, but still harsh)  to continue giving them strikes.
