Fremantle coach Ross Lyon wants the Dockers to achieve greatness, and he believes he's the man to lead them there after re-signing with the AFL club until the end of 2017.

And the Dockers received another boost on Friday when star ruckman Aaron Sandilands signed a one-year contract extension, tying him to the Dockers until the end of 2015.

Lyon arrived at the Dockers in 2011 with a target on his back after controversially replacing the popular Mark Harvey at the helm.

But his appointment has proven to be a master stroke, with the former Saints coach leading Fremantle to a maiden grand final appearance last season.

Lyon still had two years to serve on his original four-year contract, but chief executive Steve Rosich said the club's strong performances over the past two seasons made it an easy decision to re-sign the 48-year-old.

The Dockers will start this season as one of the premiership favourites, alongside Sydney and Hawthorn.

Lyon wants to turn Fremantle into a great club, and he knows the only way to do that is by winning premierships.
