Position: Midfield

Drafted: Hawthorn, Round 5, Pick #75 2008 National Draft

Last Drafted By: St Kilda

HISTORY:

Born in New Zealand, Savage moved to Australia as a boy. He was drafted by Hawthorn from the Dandenong Stingrays with the 75th selection (5th round) in the 2008 AFL Draft.

Savage made his debut against Adelaide on the MCG on 14 August 2009. Savage had 4 kicks and 3 handpasses, he also kicked a point.

Savage was nominated for the 2011 AFL Rising Star after Hawthorn's round 8 game against St Kilda. Savage had 26 disposals, 14 marks and kicked 2 goals in Hawthorn's 30 point win.

VERDICT:

Wasn't in the best 22 for the Hawks but managed to play 15 games for the year and was the sub on 5 occasions in rounds 2,4,5,21,23. He averaged 67.2 in 2013 with a career high 77.2 in 2011.

Hawthorn traded Savage to St Kilda and now he finds himself in the best 22 which should help his average.

Scott Watters said : "Shane is an exciting player who brings pace and penetration to our midfield. At 22, he is approaching his prime and will add another dimension to our developing midfield group. We look forward to him embarking on a long career at St Kilda"

With a good pre-season behind him and the prospect of full games without being the sub i think he could raise his average to around 85+ depending on his role in the team. He played forward in several games in 2013 will he get DPP ?

Is Savage fantasy relevant for 2014 at a price of around $280,000 - $300,000 ? I think his price will scare people away but he might be one of those midpricers that scores well and makes you cash early.

PLAYER PROFILE UPDATE:  24/12/2013 ..  Savage price $364,900 (no pun intended   ;D  )   given the good early fixtures the Saints have Savage may score really well early and make some decent cash. People seem to be going with Premo's and the cheaper players like Michie, Tyson, C.Beams etc so i don't think you will see Savage in many teams this year.

Saints 2014 Fixture:

MEL, GWS, WC, ADE, ESS, BRI, HAW, CAR, GC, BYE, COL, PORT, GEE, WC, RIC, CAR, NTH, FRE, GC, WB, SYD, RIC, ADE

Man he can score big when he gets the chance. Definitely considering him but the only concern is his scoring ability was great when in a top side, but how will he go in a bottom 3 side?

he played in all 3 losses for hawthorn

Geelong rd 1 - 63
Geelong rd 15 - 54
Richmond rd - 93

That scares me off a bit, however I give him a decent chance at dpp, if you look at his news articles it either mentions him going forward or he's matched up on a defender 7 times out of his 15 games

Ablett scores well for a bottom club, yes slightly different  ;D   There are players who play for bottom clubs and still score well, he might be one of them ?

No offence Specky but that means nothing to me now he plays for St Kilda. Was it Savage's fault the Hawks were losing to geelong ? maybe that's why they got rid of him  ;D   .. also he was the sub in the round 1 loss to Geeelong. Buddy Franklin probably played in all of those three loses aswell  :-\   (don't know that for a fact)

Mr.Craig

St Kilda should have a nice soft draw but I'd only be interested if he was sub 250k.

Even if he was M/F  ?

Oh it may of come across as he was the reason hawks were losing, not at all, just pointing out that when he's in a losing team his scores lowered like most players so I wouldn't expect him to score as well at st Kilda

Yep.

Have to keep in mind the benefit to a player's scoring of having a team like Hawthorn around him compared to that of St Kilda. I think I'll be able to find better value elsewhere.

Yeah i guess we wont be able to make a definitive decision until we see some Nab games. Far from being a lock, but one to keep an eye on imo.

popedelio

I reckon he could go close to a 90 average. I'm very optimistic on his opportunity in the STK midfield and for him to score well :)

timmyparso

Shane Savage is definately one for the radar. 2013 average 67.3 which includes 4 green vests and 1 red vest from 15 games.

Non vest scores include 97, 105, 102, 94 and a 115

If he avoids the vest at the Saints he could give a 90+ average.

Watch during pre-season to see how Saints play him.

fertalong

Definitely has potential to avg 90+, but with McEvoy gone, and potentially NDS and montagna? leaving, I can't see the saints putting up much of a fight. He might not reach his potential due to his team getting slaughtered.
Definitely one to watch though.
