Despite players wishes, the AFL commission has approved an interchange cap of 120 per match, per team. Changes made at breaks and substitute changes will not be included in the cap.

Mr.Craig

They still get over one rotation per minute so has anything really changed? I think the rule is pretty unnecessary.

most teams aren't going over 120 rotations a week anyway. That being said, last year adelaide was doing like 150.

the intention: to slow down the game and create less injuries
the result: the game will keep same pace and fatigued players will cause more injuries.

the AFL really should listen to the players, they know what they are doing.

It's like the least cap they could have done!

So, a club could be forced to leave an injured player on the ground, or get a 50 metre penalty? Could be the difference in a close game....

Can see a lot of interchanges being made in the breaks as they do not count according to article.

They say the average was 133 this year down from previous year so maybe they should just try reducing 10 per year till they get the desired number. This number will be in force for next 2 years so maybe they should have made it 130 this year and 120 in 2015.

Do not agree with the 50 metre penalty especially if in dying minutes of a game you have an injury to a player already used sub but rather than risk a goal in tight game the injured player is left on the ground causing further aggravation to injury/  This action may leave the club and the AFL open for litigation under Work place safety legislation so hopefully the powers that be have factored that in.

God this is a stupid rule. None of the rule changes to make the game slower in the last few years has worked. This is only going to make the game and interchange a more technical and strategic aspect of the game that is really not needed.

What ever happened to football about being to kick the ball between the sticks? Now it is all about when to use your sub and managing your bench rotations. All a huge load of crap.

Interesting comment from berger on the cap - saying it may be the end of single rucks with teams being forced to play 2 genuine ruckman.

Not sure how I feel about the specific rule, but I wish the would stop flowering around with the game. Just leave it for one season!!

Surely if they are going to cap interchanges they could scrap the sub rule...
