The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend's matches. The following charges were laid:

Charges laid:
Jake Carlisle, Essendon, has been charged with a level two striking offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for striking Lance Franklin, Hawthorn, during the first quarter of the round 18 match between Essendon and Hawthorn, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 26, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

Jake Melksham, Essendon, has been charged with a level one Engaging in rough Conduct offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Jarryd roughead, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the round 18 match between Essendon and Hawthorn, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 26, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). In summary, he can accept a $1950 sanction with an early plea.

Luke Hodge, Hawthorn, has been charged with a level one Tripping offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for Tripping Paddy Ryder, Essendon, during the third quarter of the round 18 match between Hawthorn and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 26, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

Max Bailey, Hawthorn, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent Contact with an Umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Jacob Mollison during the fourth quarter of the round 18 match between Hawthorn and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 26, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Danyle Pearce, Fremantle, has been charged with a first offence for being the instigator of a melee ($2400 sanction) for being the instigator of a melee at the start of the first quarter of the round 18 match between Fremantle and Adelaide, played at Patersons Stadium on Saturday July 27, 2013.

James Podsiadly, Geelong, has been charged with a level one striking offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for striking Jack Steven, St Kilda, during the second quarter of the round 18 match between the Geelong and St Kilda, played at Simonds Stadium on Saturday July 27, 2013.

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his penalty is increased from a reprimand to a one-match sanction, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the St Kilda Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has 93.75 demerit points carried over from within the past 12 months, increasing the penalty to 173.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 130.31 points and a one-match sanction.

Other incidents assessed:
Contact between Gold Coast's Greg Broughton and Carlton's Dennis Armfield from the third quarter of Saturday's match was assessed. The ball was loose with Armfield seeking to take possession when Broughton comes to the contest from the opposite direction. Broughton bends down to pick up the ball and then braces for contact as Armfield runs into him. It was the view of the panel that Broughton had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Western Bulldogs' Liam Jones and West Coast's Eric Mackenzie from the first quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. A 50-metre penalty was paid against player Jones at the time of the incident for the high contact, and the panel deemed no further action was required.

Contact between the Western Bulldogs' Daniel Giansiracusa and West Coast's Josh Kennedy from the second quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. Kennedy and Giansiracusa are approaching the loose ball from opposite directions. As Kennedy taps the ball away from the contest, Giansiracusa braces for contact and has his eyes on the ball at all times. It was the view of the panel that Giansiracusa had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.
