How many LTI's do Port have at the moment? Surely has has to get upgraded. Hes too good to sit on a rookie list.

Gray and Butcher will come off soon so will only be Nick Salter

IMPRESSIVE Port Adelaide rookie-list utility Kane Mitchell is eyeing a round one start.

Last year's Sandover Medallist is chasing the spot made available by key position player Nick Salter's demotion to the long-term injury list and says he is ready to grab it with both hands.

"It's unfortunate that 'Salts' is on the long-term injury list but it presents an opportunity for one of our four rookies to get elevated,'' said mature-age rookie Mitchell, 23.

"I guess I've got a 25 per cent chance if the club wants to promote someone.

"I feel bad for Salts because every time he's on the track he trains the house down but he's very, very unlucky with injuries.

"I want to play AFL - being on a senior list has been a goal of mine - but I've just got to make sure I continue to work hard and we'll see what happens.''

Dual Claremont premiership player Mitchell has been a revelation in his three months with the Power.

The No. 5 selection at the December rookie draft, the hard-running, long-haired Mitchell starred in Port's trial against SANFL club Port Magpies and was the Power's second best player in its NAB Cup defeat to the Crows.

He said he had taken to AFL training "like a duck to water''.

"I'm happy with how I'm training, the coaching staff are helping me and my teammates are making sure I'm getting into the right spots,'' Mitchell said.

"I've still got to get used to the pace of the (AFL) game and continue to work on my skills and running patterns but that all comes down to hard work.

"The good thing is that I'm enjoying every minute of it, being around a footy club every day is something that I love and I haven't felt too much out of place.

"But I'm not getting ahead of myself. I've still got a lot to learn and a lot of development in me but hopefully I get the chance (to play) this year and continue to grow.''

Mitchell's rivals for rookie-list promotion are the experienced Darren Pfeiffer, midfielder Danny Butcher and rebounding defender Justin Hoskin.

Salter is sidelined for at least eight weeks with foot stress fractures which have plagued him for the past three years.

I dont really have a space in ym squad for him at this stage. im finding it hard to only pick the 10 mids. I already had to kick embers out and i want him too.

Im kind of hoping mitchell will come into the squad later in the year. its looking to me like he is coming round 1. he will be in my squad round 1 if thats the case, just no clue who to kick out. Might even have to drop viney.

Hearing that @knomitchell has been elevated. Lock him in boys and girls. (Double locked in #AFLFantasy)

Haven't seen any confirmation on this. Will keep a look out.

I probably won't pick him main reason is the club wants Salter to make an impact at AFL and want him to hold a significant role in the team. With Chaplin gone it opens the door for guys like Salter who could of been playing round 1 if he didn't continue to have  problems with his foot .Right now he is set to miss up till round 4-5 by Mitchell wouldn't of made much money and be forced back onto the rookie list.
Lets not forget Salter was a first round pick a few years ago and has struggled with ongoing foot problems and found it hard to crack into the team.
Perhaps no one will be elevated

in comes kaneo... out goes.... Crouch? Wines? Viney? :o

Good to have choices hey? ;)

There's always an overrated 'you must have this guy' sort of player that's no biggie if you don't have him and I reckon this year that dude might be Wines. Might still get him but so many 107-108 options.

Yeah, I'm going Jesse Lonergan over Wines. I was burnt by Conigs last year, so won't be paying massive prices for rooks anymore.

I feel like you're being a bit harsh on Conigs. Sure there were some bumps along the road but he averaged a respectable 75.6 prior to the byes which is the time people were looking to trade him out. At least from my viewpoint he did what I'd expected. Compare that to a guy like Old Mac who appeared to be a steal at his basement price but was an absolute nightmare to own.

If you think Lonergan will be a better pick in the long term in regards to scores/vests/JS then that's all good but I'm not sure it's wise for anyone to dismiss out of hand the likes of Whitfield, Toumpas and Wines. Their high draft position came on the back of proven ball winning, goal kicking and tackling dominance.

Two of the best fantasy picks last year were Zorko and Gibson who were dirt cheap so it's not necessarily a case of "you get what you pay for" but I'm certainly of the view that Wines will be one of the best rookie picks this year. I'd be leaving money in the bank or have a strategy in place to maneuver one of those more expensive guys into your team if they go gangbusters early and change your opinion.

Agree with the above comments. Might even replace Lonergan with Matt Jones or Brad Crouch. The money can be used on improving other spots, which far more valuable. Then you can downgrade a premium/mid-pricer if a more expensive rookie guns it from the start who you don't have.

This is my concern too but with all rookies at his price the biggest price rises are the first few, we could still catch that rise and side trade to another rookie who had a slow start with massive potential (if there is one at that stage) or catch a rookie that starts in rounds 3-4, they won't all start round 1.

Mitchell is looking like a high possession getter, good to cash in while you can.
