Majak Daw - North Melbourne

POSITION: Ruck

OFFICIAL PRICE FOR 2013: $108,500

AGE: 21

HEIGHT: 195cm      WEIGHT: 94kg

HISTORY:

2009    The first Sudanese born player to be AFL listed after playing Australian football for only four years. A small ruckman/key forward,he is quick, strong in the air and has an extraordinary leap. The Roos labelled him as an exciting prospect

2010   In his first season at North he played 5 senior VFL games with Werribee early but was later hampered by knee problems and spent the rest of the year in the VFL reserves. Played predominantly as a ruckman with occasional stints up forward

2011   Continued his impressive development in 2011, playing a full VFL season as Werribee's No 1 ruckman. At his best, is an exhilarating player but needs to improve consistency and game sense.

2012   Daw was suspended from North Melbourne in February 2012 and sent back to train with the Werribee Tigers for an indefinite period for lying to the club and coach Brad Scott about going to a nightclub in period where he was recovering from knee surgery.

VERDICT: Had another impressive season with Werribee in 2012 after his suspension and has won elevation to North's senior list for 2013. Will be fighting it out with D.Currie and B.Mabon for the second ruck role. Im not sure who will get the second ruck role i reckon it's between Currie and Daw so i guess once again we will have to watch the NAB and see who looks like grabbing the spot.

PREDICTION: If selected to play the second ruck role he could average 55-65 ? with stints in the forward line.

Andrew

Witts slightly ahead of him at this stage, only because you know Jolly is a good chance of missing plenty of games. Then Hudson is unlikely to be able to run out a full game by himself. Compare that to the Roos who have Goldstein with Petrie as 2nd ruck, and I doubt they'll go in with another ruckman.

Im thinking about having Daw and Currie .. one of them will get games and if Goldy got injured touch wood maybe both would get a gig.

This is exactly what i was thinking!  :)

It would be a lock combo for me if Daw was R/F

+ 1 .. spewin Daw isnt an R/F ..i have Cox in my forward line as backup via the R/F link but i might put these Roos boys in to start with one of them will get games and go up and then i can downgrade one for a cheap R/F and use Cox as my backup

On 9 News tonight, Drew Petrie said that Daw had one of the more impressive pre-seasons.

Majak Daw says he doesn't want to be a AFL novelty and is committed to making his career a success

North Melbourne big man Majak Daw wants to be much more than an AFL cultural novelty and a human highlights reel.

Even before he plays his first game for premiership points, the AFL's first Sudanese-born player is building an impressive highlights package.

A You Tube clip of a remarkable running goal he kicked in the VFL in 2011 has attracted more than 70,000 views.

He added more magic moments in AFL pre-season games for North Melbourne on Friday night.

The stand-out was when Daw skipped around Richmond's Steven Morris then fended him off with one arm before goaling on the run.

Coach Brad Scott says such dazzling moments were inevitable from the 195cm ruckman-forward, whose athleticism has drawn comparisons with Nic Naitanui and Lance Franklin.

What wasn't guaranteed was that the 21-year-old - who spent three years on North's rookie list before being upgraded at the end of last season - would find the professionalism to make it count.

"Players reach a crossroads in their career where the penny drops and they realise what it takes, that natural talent's not enough,'' Scott said.

"They realise what it takes to be a 24-7 professional athlete.

"I probably questioned whether he could adapt.''

Scott said Daw had made that transition in the past year and will almost certainly play senior football this year.

Daw agreed his dedication had improved greatly but added when he looked at veteran teammate Brent Harvey, who has played a club record 346 matches, he realised he was just scratching the surface.

"I'm starting to see the progress of the hard work I've done so far,'' Daw said.

"But I mean it's only a small step in terms of what those guys have been through.pe``I think it's so hard already.

"But Boomer just comes to the club, does everything to the best of his ability day in, day out.

"I've just got to try to be like those guys.''

Of his goal against the Tigers, Daw said Scott had told him to back his instincts and he didn't have a plan when he took on Morris.

"I had no idea,'' Daw admitted.

"I just had the ball in my hands and I was confronted with a player and I just backed myself and wanted to kick that goal.''
