"CARLTON defender Jordan Russell has left the club.

Russell and his management held talks with Carlton officials yesterday where he informed them he would pursue a fresh start as an unrestricted free agent.

It is understood the Blues did not try to stand in his way.

Russell, a No.9 draft pick in 2004, was runner-up in Carlton's 2010 best-and-fairest but has steadily fallen out of favour at Visy Park in the two years since.

Sources said he was happy to move interstate to reignite his career, with regular opportunity the clear priority."
