Thanks Asha.  I think Hille and Murphy serve the same purpose in this team.  I don't think either is a keeper, but If they stay fit then they should add value quickly and present as an upgrade option.  It is a fair point re Ryder however - hopefully the preseason will provides some clues as to how the Essendon ruck will work in 2010 - although I get the feeling Laycock will be the biggest loser if Ryder stays in the centre.

I've got Murphy in my team too. A lot will depend on the Nab cup but if he stays fit why not pick him? He will average 90 if fit and for that price its good value

From what Knights has said so far I get the impression Ryder will spend more time at CHF CHB. He will be used in the ruck as needed (covering injuries etc).  I would see Essendon starting the year with Hille and Laycock rucking with both able to go forward when resting.

Dude, you finished 326th - YOU should be dispensing the advice.  In any case....

If you're keen on Ottens then replace Cordy with Trent West to provide some injury insurance.  I started Bradd Dalziell this year in SC and that didn't go too well.  Can't see myself making the same mistake twice - he's more of a DT player anyway.

The fact that you don't think Barry Hall is a worry is a worry.....

I hear you on St Kilda players.  Problem is is that the majority of the midfielders will be valued $600k+ and most wont be willing to forgo Ablett.  Maybe Fisher will be picked up in a few teams and some will start Rievoldt but I think St Kilda will be largely under represented is SC until the player values start moving.

I'm pro-Murphy.  He may not get injured this year until round 12 and buy then he would have done his job and I will have upgraded him to a prem.  I'm definately willing to take the chance.

Wilkopolis, even though murphy will play every game, he won't score so well now that Hall is down there to get the kicks to. Smith moving to the saints. Might have to fight for a starting position next year with the defence they had this year. i would replace smith with a rookie like sheppard or talia.

asha1984 with Hille coming back and mcphee leaving, ryder might be put down back. Remember Ryder was brought in as a defender. hille will be the number ruck when he plays next year. Knights likes Hooker and will likely play him in the ruck to back up hille (laycock is too much of a waste to play so won't get a game). Also if ryder is doing ruck work, hille will move down forward to help the inexperienced forward line. At his price he is going to be worth the risk.

I'm thinking I should have named this thread 'Robert Murphy - does he suck?'  I've never seen anyone polarise opinion as much as he.  I'm in the same camp as Ronl - but the detractors have a fair point as well.  Basically, it comes down to this:

- Spend more for a player who - barring injury - will play evey game and *should* increase in value enough to allow upgrade to a premium.

Or

- Bank an extra $200K.  Select an extra kid.  *Hope* he plays enough games to level off at a decent price and then sell down.

The tradeoff is value (both immediate & future) vs consistency of games (again - ignoring injury).  The composition of individual teams is going to play a large part in which way people flip on Murphy.

As for Smith - I can't see why the Saints would have picked him without a specific purpose in mind so I think he'll play out a fair bit of the year (again - ignoring injury).  Considering his alleged talent I'm willing to stump $200K on a speculative pick and then back him on the bench with a good quality rookie.  The potential upside is too good to ignore.

Agree with Hellopplz on Hille.   Ryder is more versatile & will be used more in key position.  $250K for a primary ruck who will most likely rest up forward is a good deal.

Robert Murphy is worth the risk i think for that price. I mean if it doesnt work and he gets injured early you can trade him off for a rookie - but like you say if he gets injured by round 12 he has done his job and you can cash him in. I think you should stick with your gut feeling on a player and go for it!

Hey

All the trade activity this year got me thinking about value picks for Supercoach 2010. The team I have put together is full of players I am hoping increase in value quickly without compromising the weekly score too much.  Would appreciate your comments.  Guys in bold I am still mulling over

Defenders
Corey Enright
Luke Hodge
Nathan Bock
Josh Hunt
Jessie Smith
Andrew Raines
Sam Fisher
(kid)
(kid)

Midfield
Gary Ablett
Adam Cooney
Shaun Burgoyne
Luke Ball
Brent Prismall
Anthony Morabito
(kid)
(kid)

Forwards
Matthew Pavlich
Lance Franklin
Brett Deledio
Steve Johnson
Scott Gumbleton
Austin Wonaeamirri
Robert Murphy
(Jack Watts)
(kid)

Rucks
Aaron Sandilands
David Hille
(Jason Laycock)
(Robbie Warnock)

Some Notes:
- $236K remaining in bank
- Jessie Smith & Luke Ball's inclusion entirely dependant on being traded to another club
- Will monitor Raines to see if it's likely he will get regular games
- Still tossing up whether to swap Watts for Wonna and insert another kid in the forward line bench

Wilko is this your current team or you still finalising it?
