I know I'm probably in trouble with the byes and need to work through them.

Not a bad first up team for a nebie.  Can do with work though.

Defence: Look at Upgrading McDonald to a prem with Round 11 or Round 12 bye. Will help offset the loss you will make from your top 3 all having the round 13 bye.
Mids: Not fan of Griffen - as 3rd Mid look to get in Ablett to give you a second Pernanent Captain. A Mid prem of Ablett Swan and Selwood will set you up.
Forwards Solid Robinson will need to stand up this year. 
In summary Fisrt Upgrade Griffen to Ablett then McDonald to Hanley, Heppell or Hurn
