Same as you exactly tor01doc. Ablett, Swan and J Selwood. Set and forget in the ruck. Six keepers ( 1 unique ) in the forward line. The backline two keepers and all the rest of my team are rookies. Trying to pick what I think are the best rookies then finish the line with keepers. But unlike most, I'm not chasing the 50k. I'm setting my team in an attempt to win 1k and the car. Cheers and goodluck

6 keepers in the front end and only 2 down back? Well that sure is different :) Good luck!

And yes Impromptu (last years winner) had ZERO premium mids in 2010 and finished 188th overall. He says it was his best team ever, but 2011 everything went his way but in 2010, he had to make his own luck.

The current team im going with has 6 prems (including heppell) and Hargrave + 2 rookies, Ablett and 7 rooks, 2 prem ruck, and 6 prems (including Adams, N. Roo and Sidebottom) + 3 rooks.

I'm just tinkering around atm. But I'm going to end up going with either this strategy or a 4-4 mids.

One mid super elite isn't enough.

4 premiums is too many.

Reckon 2 of Pendles / GAJ / Swan is minimum.

For balance I'll go GAJ / Swan and another really strong one (say NDS / Selwood / Murphy / Boyd - depnding on byes) plus 5 rookies.

Too many rookies = too much risk = not enough points on the board early.

3 super premiums + 1 premium that will become super premium this year, plus 4 rookies is my structure could change but i wouldnt say 4-4 is too many with the cheaper options in defence, rucks and forwards.

Didn't Jay To (Impromptu) use this theory two years ago. Although he didn't win that year I think he still ended up around 700 or something.

Not saying it is a winning strategy, just saying, relatively, it has worked before.

There was no such thing as a green vest 2 years ago...which most cheapos will be lobbed with = multiple scores of approx 25

good luck with that

Excellent point, it's not something I was considering anyway though.

Great point bowyanger - what does that mean?

Impromptu has had some very different starting sides over the years and always seems to finish top 100ish.  Some are very innovative and he has a great thinking mind but its his way of trading during the year that people need to focus on.  He trades hard and early-bucking the general trend of keeping trades in the bank.  IMO, you can start the year with any tactic - its how you build your team from then on that really matters.

key factors: Luck (ie. no injuries) and selecting good rookies.

Whatever your starting tactic, goodluck and back yourself because it CAN work.

impromptu started with k. Hunt and still came first.

I reckon 7 rookies is too much but 5 or mabye 6  could work well. U need a few good mid premiums to start, cause otherwise u will score too badly early.

He had atley, khunt and cam richardson!

You can apply this strategy with slightly less risk by using an MPP FWD / MID

As below.

As your mid rookies ripen and upgrade you can move Fyfe forward, means you end up with preium forward line out of the gate (assuming N Roo works)

SonsOfZeus

the option down back and fwd dont warrant the theory. rather go 3 prem mids and 4back and forward.

Erm...

It means that if you have lots of cheapos on the ground you will more than likely be posting a thread on this website crying about having multiple green vest players in your side

An issue that is out of your control (coaches decision 1hr before 1st bounce) UNLESS you reduce the risk in the first place buy spending wisely around the ground and choosing players that are at least going to play a full game & keeping potential green vests to a minimum.

At the start of the season, whilst everyone is still fresh & there arent many injuries around...it is most definately going to be the new, untried, less fit, less drilled  players that are going to get green vested.

This impacts on your score and the time taken for taking cows to market

IMO initial team setup of your onfield players far outwieghs luck and choosing good rookies at gaining success & results.

Your good rookies should really be on the bench, and used as an emergency.....luck can be affected by bad decisions such as getting multiple green vests....or hiring missy higgins

The End

Any questions?
