im just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on Brian Lake vs Reece Conca?

Conca is $12K more than lake, however is uninjured and likely to spend more time in the midfield

what are everyone's thoughts on this?

pavs nose

so many positives for conca and so many negatives for lake. conca for me

im beginning to think the same thing, more chance of possession for Conca in the midfield compared to lake down back, but there's nothing to same lake wont score well either - bit of a catch 22 really

Honest question, what are the positives for Conca? I've seen alot of people picking him in their teams, and I think I missed the memo as to why!

bottlemart

Yeah i didn't get the memo either jfitty.

Could someone please pass that memo on to myself and jfitty.

In the meantime, I had a look at Conca and lakes numbers.

Lake consistantly averaged in the 90's in 2007-2009, then averaged 104 in 2010, with 3 scores over 160, and a top score of 179.  Now priced very low due to injury riddled 2011.

Conca averaged 55 last year, with a top score of 93.

Conca is slightly more expensive than lake.  Also what about the second year rule.  Conca in his 2nd year is almost $200k more expensive than a first year rookie, so is he being picked as a keeper or a cash cow???

I'm not convinced on Conca yet, but if someone can mount a case for picking him, I'm very happy to listen.

I'm going to jump in the Lake.

Why go Conca? I really don't understand the logic behind people choosing him, especially with Richmond's draw as well ???

quinny88

Conca is the lesser risk however... If your backline looks like most peoples you probably have a st.kilda, richmond, hawthorn, carlton combination or atleast 2 or 3 of the 4 so can you really afford to put another player in from that bye group?

i guess im just as intrigued as the next coach as to whether Conca or Lake is the way to go - thats why i put this topic up :P haha

however the positives and negitives ive been able to come up with are:

Conca:
Positives

  • potential move to the midfield/more time in the midfield - attacks more points
  • potential cash cow the upgrade off one rookie - in turn also saving a trade
  • young and fit - injury free
  • played 17 games in his first year- you'd like to thing he would get just as many if not more games this year excluding injury
  • The draw - ive listed this as a positive and negitive, if the tigers do bad you'd think the ball would be down in there defence line a bit - and if his in the midfield its a 50/50 call as to which team has the ball so the draw can be a good or bad thing
Negatives:

  • more expensive than a rookie cash cow
  • might not score as well if he doesnt get as much time int he midfield
  • The draw might not work in his favor
  • 2nd year player (curse)

some very good points made by all, and good question Adz23, and the positives and negatives are a good read.

At the moment I favour Lake over Conca, but happy to listen to all thoughts on both.  There are quite a few in that mid range defence bracket.

Christian Howard is one I am seriously looking at (3rd year now) and a better price, low 200's.

cheers bottlemart :)

i think lake edges conca out on experience but conca has more ground to gain by spending time in the midfield, it might be a wait for the season to start n see how it goes, if not have both haha

chirstian howards has looked good early but im not sure whether he could consistently keep it up or not, not with some of the senior geelong players around him

the other slight concern is the depth int he backline is awful this year. once you have 2-4 premium backman the mid prices have issues or the rookies dont look massive standard compared to other lines.
