The current priority pick rules have been scrapped in favour of a new yet-to-finalised system. The AFL will now use a formula-based system to hand out additional draft picks. Clubs won't be told what this formula is but it is understood that the factors that will be used in the formula are as follows:

  • a club's premiership points over a period of years
  • its percentage over a period of years
  • any finals appearances in recent seasons
  • any premierships in recent seasons
  • and club injury rates in each relevant season.

Fair enough IMO. The issue of 'tanking' has been a recent problem but hard to combat if the AFL doesn't know the clubs are doing it deliberately to obtain draft picks. Of course, even if a club doesn't tank, the priority picks are unfair if a club has made a recent grand final/final series, like West Coast recently.

What are your thoughts?

probably got rid of it so GWS didn't become even more OPd in future tbh :P

i'm all for the change, and i'm with robbo off 360, to stop the possibility of a club still tanking to get the wooden spoon there should be an actual wooden sppon handed out that the team who earns it has to show up and be presented with and then display it at the club

gold :)

This should be fantastic if they get it right

The thought of Scully and Davis being rated more than Ablett, Risky-telli and Brennan was quite astonishing

Ziplock

I think that's because they were taking age, potential and current talent into consideration. Ward, Scully and Davis are all only like 20 years old.

Finally, ruined the end of year quality of footy.
