Fellow Supercoaches,
Here is a formline and breakdown from the weekend’s NAB Cup games.  There were some very interesting scores on the weekend and bear in mind that the SC scoring system dictates that the median score for every game (both teams combined) is 3,300, which means that even though the games were 20 minute halves, the scores reflected a full game.

MELBOURNE

Jack Grimes â€" 146pts from 11 touches and 4 marks in game one against the Crows, racking it up at will in defence.  140pts from 9 possessions, 2 marks and 2 tackles while keeping Chad Cornes to 4 touches in game two.  He will be the next Demons Captain after Brad Green.  $428,200 is a touch expensive for a guy who only played half a season last year, but he’ll average at least 90 this year, mark my words.

Colin Garland â€" 115pts from 11 touches and 2 marks while minding Taylor Walker in game one.  Only concern is that Walker got away from him at times, but he didn’t get punished.  90pts from 5 possessions on Brett Ebert in game two.  He’ll probably get some extended game time with the injury to James Frawley to start the year, so maybe a sneaky at $347,200.  Might get you 75 a week.

Jack Trengove â€" Tagged by Andy Otten in the first game, and had 5 handballs among 7 touches and 2 tackles for 85pts.  Game two had him getting 9 possessions, taking three marks and kicking a goal, but he only scored 54pts.  Disposal efficiency is clearly a problem.

ADELAIDE

Patrick Dangerfield â€" 15 possessions and 3 marks in game one for 147pts.  7 touches and a goal in game two for 129pts.  This kid has the goods and if he can stay away from the physio table, he could be a lock as your #5 or #6 forward for $340,100.

Andy Otten â€" 143pts tagging Trengove in game one from 12 touches and 4 marks.  Ran out of petrol in game two for 5 possessions and 38pts, which could be a concern.  He is returning from 12 months out and the break between games hurt him more than most.  If you haven’t got him, you might want to check your medication, because at $185,100, there is no better value in SC this year.

Scott Thompson â€" Only played game two against the Power, but 15 possessions, 4 marks and 160pts in 40 mins of footy is super impressive.  He’s an A-grade midfielder who’ll average you 95+ this year, but doesn’t come with the premium price tag ($441,600).  A great unique pick in midfield.

PORT ADELAIDE

Kane Cornes â€" Sat out game one as an unused sub but got amongst it with 11 touches and 130pts in game two.  Similar to Thompson in that he’ll get you very good scores each week, but I’m not sure he’s got the big 150+ game in him anymore.  He’s getting a little pricy at $496,800.

Not much else for Port, as they were pretty ordinary.  Can’t see many of their players being used this year.

RICHMOND

The ball could be a permanent resident in the Tiger’s backline this year, so defenders could be good.  Brett Deledio looks like the only one you’d seriously consider, with Nathan Foley as a cheapish midfielder.

David Astbury â€" Had 12 touches and took 7 marks on Jarrad Waite in game one for 138pts.  Game two saw him standing Leigh Brown for 8 touches, 2 marks and 91pts.  He looks quite comfortable at CHB and he could be a cheapy in defence for $229,800.

Matt White â€" 8 touches and 2 marks for 96pts playing on Mitch Robinson in game one and backed that up with 11 possessions against Collingwood for 110pts.  $277,700 in the midfield makes it difficult to put him in, as he’s to expensive to be a cash cow and not good enough to spend for points scoring value.

CARLTON

Marc Murphy â€" Super against the Tigers, especially in the second half.  11 touches, 4 tackles and 165pts shows his class.  Didn’t back up against the Pies in game two but he looks the goods again this year.  He’s a great unique pick in midfield as a premium that not a lot of people, other than Carlton supporters, have; most take Judd instead.

Jeremy Laidler
â€" On early form, the Cats might have made a Blue here (hahahaha).  Only played a crap Richmond side, but 11 possessions and 3 marks for 156pts looks very promising.

Andrew Walker â€" Played forward in both games and cracked the ton both times.  102pts from 7 touches and two marks against Richmond and 8 touches, 2 goals (should’ve been 4) and 114pts against Collingwood.  He could have left during trade week, but that might be the tonic he needs to repay the Blues using pick #2 in the 2003 draft on him.

COLLINGWOOD

Chris Dawes â€" Looks like he could hold down FF this year, with Cloke roaming up the ground.  3 goals from 8 touches and 131pts against Richmond the scored 75pts in a half against the Blues before corking his thigh and going off for precautions.  Might be a decent mid pricer in your forward line for $364,600.

Andrew Krakouer â€" Didn’t do much in the first half against the Tigers when in a forward pocket but motored into the midfield for 2 marks and 7 possessions for 43pts in the last 5 minutes.  Play HFF in the second game against Carlton and scored 73pts.  Imagine what he could do in the midfield!!

Steele Sidebottom â€" Is this kid really only a third year player??  Quietish against Richmond for 49pts, but he did give 3 free kicks away and had 8 touches, then smashed Carlton for 12 touches, 4 marks, a goal and 116pts.  Still only $410,800, so a prime candidate for #4 midfield spot this year.

WEST COAST

Dean Cox â€" He’s fit during pre-season for the first time in 3 years so he looked great.  12 touches, 5 marks and 10 hitouts for 144pts was a good start, but let’s not kid ourselves…he was rucking against Sam Grimley (who??) so there was no opposition for him.  In saying that, he looked good.

Andrew Gaff â€" Eagles first round draft pick last year with a ready made body for AFL.  6 touches in game one for 46pts and didn’t back up for game two against the Dockers.  Looked poised and calm under pressure against a young Hawks team in his outing though.  Should be a good pick as a #7 midfielder this year.

Shannon Hurn â€" Only played the second game against Freo, but looked at home as usual on half back, kicking it 60m every time he got it.  3 marks and 7 possessions for 118pts.

FREMANTLE

Greg Broughton â€" A star in 2009, but injured most of last year.  Started off with a bang against Hawthorn with 10 touches, 5 tackles and 4 marks for 169pts.  Sat out game two as an unused sub, but he’s looking ominous.  It might be a tough choice between him and Jack Grimes for the #3 defender spot this year!!

Tendai Mzungu â€" I’ve been preaching this kid all pre season, and look what he does…Game one: 14 possessions, 3 marks and 151pts…Game two: 9 possessions and two marks for 44pts (2FA dropped his score).  Get on this guy.  Polled 20 votes in the Sandover Medal last year and racked it up yesterday.

Michael Johnson â€" After his white powder issues last year, he came out yesterday with scores of 87 & 123 from his two games.  $383,800 might be a little under the odds.

Couldn't agree more!! Always awesome stuff WT :).

I hope Dawes stays at FF as I might be getting in Cloke :-X.

The piece is starting to get me think about Astbury and Thompson (the latter I doubt though).

Aidans Blues

Talking about Grimes, not Green he was

CFC 1979

wouldn't get too excited by the scores - formulated in rnd by some crazy format and hence out of proportion.

i'll wait till rnd 2 when natural order is restored.

fantastic write up though - good stuff :)
