Which dual position players to pick in your SuperCoach squad

Dual position players are some of the most valuable players you can have in your team. Not only are these utility players versatile for their own clubs, they can be substituted with like players in your SuperCoach squad.

With the inclusion of Gold Coast this season and the subsequent byes, selecting dual position players in your team can help in covering zeroes you may face with the best possible players. For example, the most expensive player in SuperCoach 2011, Brendon Goddard is a DEF/MID dual position player. He can be selected as a defender or a midfielder. If you select him in the backline, he can be substituted into the midfield with another DEF/MID player you select in the midfield.

Let’s say you select Goddard in your backline and Bryce Gibbs in your midfield. When Goddard has his bye in Round 4, you can substitute him with Gibbs into the midfield and use a midfield bench player on the ground â€" who would generally be a higher scorer than a defender bench player.

When selecting my team, I will be looking to find gun dual position players to match up with cheaper dual position bench players. The best players to consider are ones with links to the midfield. Let’s look at all dual position players and which ones you should be looking at to pick in your SuperCoach team this year.

DEF/MID

In my opinion, Brendon Goddard is a must have in your backline this year. With only 3 scores under 100 points last year, he can be your captain every week with the added bonus of dual position. Bryce Gibbs has been named as a DEF/MID this year which adds some value to his SuperCoach stocks. With more consistency and midfield time, we should see Gibbs increasing his output in his fifth year. These two players would fit nicely in defence and can be matched up with some cheap players in your midfield. Dyson Heppell averaged well over 100 SuperCoach points in both the Under 18 Championship and TAC Cup last year and is in line for games with the Bombers this year. Ben Jacobs is slightly cheaper but also has impressive junior numbers with a huge chance for a Round 1 debut with the Power.

FWD/MID

Some of our favourite SuperCoach players are listed as FWD/MIDs. Paul Chapman had a fantastic year in 2010 and should be considered for all sides. There are so many players that will offer fantastic service to your side this year but to get even more value from them, select the guns in the forward line and look for a cheap FWD/MID or two to link with in your midfield. The talk of the preseason has been about Andrew Krakouer. After a massive 290 SuperCoach points in the WAFL Grand Final last year, he could take an on field position. With mature age draftees being the flavour of the month, look out for Tendai Mzungu, Ian Callinan and Isaac Smith as very cheap dual position options.

There are a range of mid-priced players to select from with FWD/DEF eligibility. Sam Gilbert is a solid option who was slightly down on his previous average but still managed a third of his scores over 100 SuperCoach points in 2010. Cheaper options include Shaun McKernan, Billie Smedts, Daniel Talia and Darcy Daniher who all could get at look in at their respective clubs.

DUAL POSITIONS RUCKS

Ruck dual position links can be found in defence and forward. In defence, there is only one possible link. Kepler Bradley and Jackson Trengove. Bradley did improve a lot last year averaging 90 points, but that could be a blip on his SC radar. Trengove is still developing. It would be a gutsy and hopefully coach to select these two!

There are also limited options with RUC/FWD players. Kurt Tippett is due for a big season after dropping his average by 12 points last year. Drew Petrie looms as one of the biggest bargains of 2011. Just remember before last year, the four seasons previous returned averages of 91, 96, 88 and 91. He is a steal. An option here to make the most of dual positioning, while he is unlikely for games at this stage, select Joel Tippett as your 4th ruck and select Petrie as one of your starting forwards. Petrie can then be substituted into the rucks when one of your starting rucks have a bye or are injured, hopefully scoring more points than your other ruck bench players.
