Summary:

Chris Newman is one of the premier backmen in the competition, and in my opinion one of the best captains in the AFL. There is a growing trend of making a defender captain (Nick Maxwell, Tom Harley, Craig Bolton, Darren Glass) and it does have some merit. I think Newman is one of those players who has lifted with the extra responsibility. He scored a mere 16 in the opening round of the season (and for a player costing half a million, coaches were calling for his head) but regrouped for a strong 128 the next round. This was a pattern that continued throughout the year, and his standard deviation of 35.64 reflecys that.

Unfortunately, when your a defender for a team like Richmond, when you get thrashed your score gets impacted heavily. Take these statistics for example - Richmond won 6 times in 2010, and Newman scored 5 centuries at an average of 114.67 in those victories. In matches where Richmond were "thrashed" (by my count that was 11 times this season, and Newman played in 10 of those), Newman scored 4 centuries at an average of 83.70.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $492,200

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $468,600

Position: DEF

Newman starts this year cheaper than in 2010, and could have some value. I'd expect Newman to improve as Richmond does, and while Richmond will still get some schlackings throughout the year, surely it won't happen 11 times like it did in 2010. Surely Richmond will start to show something! I'm backing Newman to average very close to 100.

Decision:

On the short list for me, and if he doesn't make the final cut, could well be an upgrade target.

Some nice stats there Ossie. I agree that Newman at that price is very tempting. The biggest concern for me is that lack of consistency. From memory he was also inconsistent in 09' too!

You're right in that as the Tigers get better, so will he, and I expect them to do that this year.

A definite short lister for me. Could also be a handy unique.

i'll put him on the short list for now but he has some stiff competition for a spot but will defiantly look closely at him
