It would depend how is used Marshall is slated to be available Rd 1 but may be ok if Saints play both,

Thoughts on this possible change of strategy.

With the number of high priced rookies and 2nd year players I am considering sticking with the 3 prems Bont, Butters, Serong with Oliver and running the others from M5 - M10. Gives me the option of 3rd defender to go with Sheezel and Sinclair - Thinking one of Dale, Ryan. Stewart, McGovern.

Stewart looks to be good value, just got to hope he doesn't get suspended.

I am seeing a LOT, most actually teams with just the two premium mids, plenty even with just one, but those tend to have two-three mid pricers alongside.

Pretty much stacked backlines and vanilla forward lines with "the three midpricers" hornebag and rankine plus Hewett.

So exactly what you are suggesting, beef up the backline at the expense of the midfield.

Defender rookies worry me the most, just one bad game away from being dropped most of them probably, apart from Reid and Allan. Which is enough I suppose. Unless Reid goes down again :(

Pretty sure I had dead rookies on the defense bench all season last year. Trauma.

I'm not sure I will consider Stewart again, he looked fine tonight, but once he is what you need him to be surely he'll get clamped again. Early bye just adds more weight against him.

Ryan starts the season like last year and having him would be a great outcome. Dale is a solid option, one you can fit with your round 12 bye players, I certainly cannot with mine.

Mcgovern could see a decent bump without his sidekick.

I think Houston is the pick of them back there but round 3 early bye no good.

You could just about get there turning Will into Tsatas, O'Driscoll even Maric if he ends up living up to the hype. I have all three at present.

The other way to go for you to eliminate defender rooks would be to add roberts/perryman for a rook. Round 3 bye, but you only have two at present (if your flicking W Ashcroft), most have at least 3. Plenty have 4.

I can't see your team?

Here is my team with changes as suggested above. Watch on Ashcroft, Davidson, Lalor (injury) and Smillie,

As I see it 10 premiums plus Mills, Oliver, Smith and Daniel.

Bye Structure
Rd 2 0
Rd 3 Midpricers Mills and Smith
Rd 4 0
Rd 12 - Sheezel, Dale, Bontempelli, Butters, Xerri, JHF and mid pricer Daniel (May have to look at this).
Rd 13 - Sinclair, Serong, Macrae
Rd 14 - Mid Pricer Mills
Rd 15 - Gawn Mid Pricer Oliver
Rd 16 - Mid Pricer Smith

Most similar boat with Rd 12 initially.

7 round 12 bye players isn't terrible, (same number for me) season is long I would not not start them due to that bye, I suspect zero would be upgrade trades pre bye, all keepers, so you field two bench players that round 12 effectively.

Points loss should be way unders what you'd lose by not starting those round 12 bye players.

Dale would be the one if any, only due to similar quality options at the price.

Structure is good. O'Driscoll Tsatas and Hewett types and Lynch dare I say... valuable in being certain starters and unlikely subs to counter the fact other teams may have a mid Pricer you don't.

And ideal ruck setup.

Rd 12 worries me so looking for options for D3

Looking at Whitfield. Houston, Holmes to replace Dale.  As I have no prem exposure with early byes so opting for Houston at this stage to replace Dale.

Was not that impressed with Draper so Levi Ashcroft returns.

Mills obviously is a watch but can replace him with Millera.

With Coleman injured he could be a nice Target when he returns and we have 2 games to observe as well.

Rookies currently not in my team but on a watch list Lalor, Draper, Angove and a watch on Henderson if he gets games.

Well at least your not looking for a ruck after the blues match sim :(

I think I like those defender options in the order you wrote them.

H Garcia looks extremely tempting pump up Montagna gave him seems to be spot on.

Ringo

Garcia bit exy though

Hewett may be an issue as well now.  Not in the A side in match sim.

E Hewett? he was solid in the Richmond praccy match

Garcia is on the ball full mid, at least until Phillipou is back. If you can believe a praccy match...

Just a thought, if Archer Day-Wicks is your floating donut and El-Hawli doesn't get named, i would just pick the latter. Having 3 Bombers on the bench will also make looping problematic, this is something I'm trying to work around.

Isn't Houston suspended? I like Dale as an option, he was decent last year and didn't cough up too many howlers.

Ringo

Settled on Whitfield as after I posted remembered Houston suspended,

Waiting teams obviously but will move around a bit to pick rooks that play Rl - Hawai and Kako are only there atm because of DPP so easy to change around,

I liked Dale as well but that dreaded Rd 12 bye was the issue as I could not come at replacing either Sheezel, Bont, Butters, Xerri and Jhf. Daniel who most have also on that bye.

Colliwobblers

Houston only suspended round 0 which doesn't count. Whitfield has better early bye though.
