The Official WXV Rulebook

Part A - Game Day

1. Team Submissions
Submission Format Overview
Team sheets are preferably submitted using the following template:

Def: Player A, Player B, Player C, Player D.
Mid: Player E, Player F, Player G, Player H.
Fwd: Player I, Player J, Player K, Player L.
Ruck: Player M.
Util: Player N, Player O.
Emerg: Player P, Player Q, Player R, Player S.

In addition, the use of:
  • Flood/Attack, and
  • Tagging
are to be clearly defined otherwise the submission will assume these do not exist.

Submission Description

Non-Traditional Submissions (Flood/Attack) (New in 2024!!)
Moving forward, Flood and attack options will contain a score adjustment element to them. The basics still remain, Flooding is a 5-4-1-3-2 submission and Attacking is a 3-4-1-5-2 submission, however:
- When you Flood, each of your 5 defenders will have a 9% score increase, whilst each of your 3 forwards will have a 15% score decrease.
- When you Attack, each of your 3 defenders will have a 15% score decrease, whilst each of your 5 forwards will have a 9% score increase.

Other important notes:
- OOP players can be named. The 50% penalty is captured by the adjustment amount. For example an OOP forward when flooding is 42.5% of the raw score (1 * 0.85 * 0.5).
- Other bonuses (captaincy, resting) are applied to the raw score separately.
- Your opponent can't cancel out your choice to flood or attack.
- You can only use this feature 5 times across your entire season.
- You can't use it multiple times in one week (I.e. no 8-4-1-0-2 formation is allowed)

Captains
Captains are nominated each week, you have the choice of either:
  • Your nominated captain will receive double points each week. Should he not play, your vice-captain will receive double points.
  • You can nominate Co-captains, each of who will earn 1.5 times there score. If one doesn't play, the other will receive double points. No vice-captain.
  • If you fail to nominate either a C or VC then list preferences will be used to determine which players receive these roles
Tagging (New in 2024!!)
The intention behind a tag is to sacrifice part of your own players score (The Tagger) with the intention of lowering an opposition's player's score (The Captive) by more, to provide a net benefit to your matchup.
When a tag is applied, the raw scores of the two players are compared, which will result in one of two scenarios:

Scenario 1: A Successful Tag
The Tagger scores more than half the Captive's score. This results in:
  • The Tagger having their score reduced by 30%
  • The Captive having their score reduced to the Raw score of the Tagger
    • If the Tagger's raw score is higher, the Captive's score is unchanged.
Note: Within a successful tag there's a sub-category where the result is a net loss to the team applying the tag. In this case you can consider it a "wasted" tag.

Scenario 2: A Broken Tag
The Captive scores equal to or more than double the Tagger's score. This results in:
  • The Tagger having the score reduced by 50%
  • The Captive's score being unchanged.

Tagging is also subject to the following conditions:
  • The Tagger and the Captive must both be midfield eligible players named in midfield eligible positions (Mid line or Utility line). Should either of these not occur then the tag is considered void and does not count amongst the yearly allowance.
  • Each team may only apply 1 tag in each round
  • A maximum of 5 tags may be used across your entire season.
  • A player who is a Tagger for one team, can also be the Captive from the other team (i.e. Tagging the tagger)
  • Captaincy and Resting bonuses are unaffected by tagging, they are still calculated separately.
Out Of Position Players

Train-on Players (New in 2024!!)
Each coach will have the ability to choose up to 2 players to have a train-on position added for the upcoming season. These players when played in this position are only given a 25% OOP penalty instead of the usual 50%.
  • Coaches have from the end of the WXV Intl. Draft until Christmas to nominate any players they wish to use as a train-on player
  • That player will not be able to be traded in Trade Period 2.
  • For a player to be considered eligible for a ruck train-on spot, they need to have averaged at least 1 hitout per game the recently concluded AFL Home & Away season. A full list will be provided but here is the link to the source. There is no minimum games requirement applied to this criteria.
  • There are no restrictions on who can be added as a def, mid, or fwd train-on.
  • A train-on position may be added to a player who is already DPP.
  • The train-on player may be named in their added position as many times as necessary across your entire season.

Non-submissions

The Practice Of Loopholing
Captain/Vice-Captain/Co-Captain or Emergency loopholing is forbidden. Players named in the starting XV must be named in their respective AFL club's 26 player squad for that round. If this criteria has somehow been leveraged to benefit the coach that sough to exploit it, the admin may determine the entire team submission as they see fit.

However, all forms of loopholing are permitted during the EurAsia v AAP Alliance Representative Round clash.

Part B - Off-season

3. The Draft

4. Voting on Rules

5. Trade Season

6. Salary Cap
WXV runs with a salary cap system to attempt to keep teams somewhat equal. Each player and draft pick is attributed a $ value, and summed together to give an overall number for the WXV team. At the end of each trade period each club must sit within the salary cap or they will face sanctions.

Calculations
How to value each player:

Average of the 22 H&A games from the last 3 years (66 games max), multiplied by 2000 (just a magic number to look good)
Multiplied by a 'Premium factor', i.e. 1 + percentage of times that player has scored over 100
Multiplied by a 'Durability factor', i.e. 1 + games played/66 games
Multiplied by a "Age discount', i.e. 1 - [0.03 x the number of years born before 29 years of the current year (i.e. in 2017 ---> 1988, so a player born in 1985 will receive a 9% (3 x 0.03) discount)]

Players with less than 10 games are discounted. Minimum price is $100,000

Implementations
The MAX salary is 105% of the average, whilst the MIN salary is 85% of the average.

Punishments
The salary cap is calculated at three separate points. After TP1, after the draft, and after TP2.

Below Min Salary:
1. After TP1 - If your list lodgement after TP1 is under the minimum allowed salary, then in 2025 you will lose your first round draft pick and be punished 4 premiership points.
2. After the draft - N/A.
3. After TP2 - If you begin TP2 under the minimum salary then any trade must increase your salary cap situation.

Above Max Salary:
1. After TP1 - If your list lodgement after TP1 is above the maximum salary, then starting from the player who uses up the most salary, they will be delisted and replaced with a supplementary pick until the team is under the maximum.
2. After the draft - There is no immediate punishment if during the draft you are forced above the maximum salary due to the players left in the pool when your draft pick arrives. Note that you can't deliberately draft a player which would take you take you above the maximum salary, and any draft pick is forced as the lowest salary player if you are already above the maximum salary.
3. After TP2 - If during TP2 you are unable to get under the maximum salary then starting from the player who uses up the most salary, they will be delisted until your team is under the maximum allowed.

7. List Lodgements

Part C - General

8. Tanking
Any team found guilty of tanking, will lose their first round draft pick. Tanking will be result of (consistent) unreasonable selection decisions.

9. Scoring
Scores are divided by 10 to better reflect the AFL's scoring system, and are rounded to nearest whole number.
  • If rounded scores are the same, unrounded scores are used to determine the victor.
  • If the unrounded scores are the same, the result is a draw.
  • If a draw occurs in the finals, the team that finished higher on the ladder progresses.
  • All bonuses/penalties are applied independently of each other unless otherwise specified
  • All rounding is UPWARDS, but done after all bonus/penalties are applied to a player.

10. Sacking
You may be SACKED if you do not have any contact for 2 weeks (at the admin's discretion), and have not delegated an assistant to take over the team. Sacking could also occur for other reasons if needed.
