Round 1

Wharfie Time at Washington
Washington Senators (1759) defeat El Paso Pioneers (1515)

Washington starts off 2023 in fine style with a comfortable victory over their rivals at El Paso. Luke Ryan led the way with the highest score of the round in his mammoth 156, while old hand Witts chipped in with a 137 of his own, supplemented with a handful of other 100+ scores. For El Paso Tom Green stood tall with a 128, but support was lacking with only a couple other centurions to assist. Hopefully this isn't the start of a repeat of 2022 for El Paso, while Washington look keen do go one better this season.

Stewart Subbed While Cox Stands Tall
Guadalajara Pirates (1543) defeated by Calgary Fireflies (1731)

The first sub of the season! And a fortunate one too for Calgary with Tom Stewart subbed out for Brennan Cox and his lazy 141. Of course, Calgary would've won handily even if Stewart was not subbed, but it helps out the percentage for sure. Cox had ample support backing him up, but for Guadalajara it was Luke Shuey who top scored, which is an ominous sign. The Pirates will want their mids to lift next week as they tussle it out for finals positions. Calgary on the other hand look well placed to return to the promised land after a dirty season last year.

Laird Stays Low... Bermuda go Lower
Springfield Isotopes (1527) defeat Bermuda Tiger Sharks (1394)

Speaking of dirty, Springfield will be counting their lucky stars as they get away with an average score as Bermuda put up a stinker. Laird was uncharacteristically quiet, putting up his lowest score in a very long time if Twitter is to be believed, and his low score put Springfield in a tenuous position. Bermuda could not capitalise though, as the forward line decided to not really do much of anything, and captain Neale got outworked in Adelaide. Both of these sides will want to lift as they look to play finals again.

Setterfield Smashes Scorpions
Dallas Coyotes (1853) defeat Arizona Scorpions (1538)

Dallas look keen to make up for last years prelim blunder, as they blow Arizona out of the water with a big total. Oliver plugged in his customary 120+ score, and was joined by Will Setterfield, who looks to repay the faith that saw him join Dallas a couple seasons ago in a trade for the #1 pick. They were joined by a plethora of 100+ scores, the twin towers of English and Nankervis to name a few, while Arizona was led by James Sicily, though he played a lone hand in defence. Arizona will bounce back, as they're better than they demonstrated this week.

Kings Keep Their Crown
Los Angeles Kings (1718) defeat Hawaiian Surfers (1524)

LA cruise past Hawaii in an unsurprising result, they look much the same side as last year and will be well positioned to go back to back this year. Brayshaw, Docherty, Taranto, Warner... Not much Hawaii could have done, but they nailed the captaincy with Treloar and Pendlebury trying to keep the Surfers in it. It was interesting to see Sidebottom play up forward as he looked a bit out of position, but the problems went deeper than that. An expected result between two teams at different ends of the spectrum.
