Ave 100 + last 7 years...fair effort when for most of that time its all Richmond had

Agreed he is no Ablett or Pendles but I rate the bloke and love watching him play

I consider Smurph and Lids to be in the same teir as Ablett and Pendles

Ablett is just one out of the box...Pendles also really who has had some quality around him that Smurph and Lids haven't had

Ever played footy for a really crap team and a really good team in your career?

Makes a massive difference on your performance IMO.

Ive been flogged by 100 points  and Ive been in teams that have done the opposite

Guess which team I got more of the ball in, kicked more goals in and enjoyed playing in more?

Further stamps Yaabletts brilliance I know but also puts Smurph & Lids into perspective IMO

Im not a blues fan but I do like to watch Smurph play

Sublime disposal...surely Mick will be drilling the team to peel for him more?

Was at the top of his game under Ratts last few years of coaching.

MM being new coach and Smurph taking over as captain is definitely a big change in his career but he has still managed to be solid.

Had a year or 2 of slight niggles recently which caused him to drop from being considered at the same level of Pendles , Ablett  & now Fyfe etc...he was definitely up there under Ratts ....Lids was in this echelon also but as revealed today - even a slightly interrupted pre season / niggle can have an effect when your playing at such a high standard (unless ur a freak like Fyfe)

Smurph high on my radar as a POD

Elite IMO and if Gibbs can step up to help attract attention from opposition it can only mean good things for Smurphs PPG output

Can kick goals, is in a team that isn't high on point stealers

As far as Lids goes, he's only ever had the one big fantasy year. The rest of the time he's never really been played as a bonafide midfielder.

Well, Lids and Murph just aren't.

I can assure you, Gaz has played in the best and worst teams in the manner of a few years. Was the best at the Cats, and still the best at the Suns, even when they were struggling worse than the Tigers ever were (aside form the fact the Tiges could never beat them hahaha).

I think a valid point to consider is Abletts play style...how many times do you see him play a seagull role and get so many 1 -2s out the back

Ask Diesel how he used to get his 40 possessions compared to how Ablett gets his now

Ablett was all the Suns had for a while and there is no doubt IMO the team was coached to use him & protect him at every single opportunity no matter what

Admittedly this does not detract from what he achieved at Girlong but it also should be considered Girlong was a a team full of guns in that time that opposition simply couldn't lock them all down 100% of the time

Daisy is a fine example of this situation..was fantastic at Collingwood because there were so many other good players that he couldn't be held down all the time....put him at the Blues and he doesn't get as much easy ball

Meh..this is a forum for these discussions and Im simply expressing my opinion

Mat0369

Umm, Gaz averaged 17.5 contested possessions a game last year which was ranked number 1 in the league.

I am a Carlton supporter and not even I would put a current day Murph anywhere near Gaz. The man is in a league of his own and proved it at the Suns. Yes the instruction might be give Gaz the ball, but he also wins so much of his own ball it doesn't matter. Lids is nowhere near Gaz or Pendles and I wouldn't put him in the same tier as Murphy either. If we are talking in terms of importance, sure, but in terms of performance on the field, no chance.

Have a close look though at the amount of blocking and sheppard's the gold coast players do to help Gaz out around the pill (still a CP)

I am forced to watch every Suns game as we don't get much else and I do go to a few games as I live on the Goldy

Yes..ok..agreed...lets leave it as I was wrong to make that call...I could bang on about coaching methods and playstyles but Im flogging a dead horse really

Gaz is in a league of his own but I still stand by Smurph & Lids being in that top tier of players

Ablett ---------> Super Elite players (Pendlebury, Fyfe, Selwood, JPK, Buddy etc) then there's a whole lot of nothing then there's your elite players such as Rocky, Murph, Danger, Jobe, Sloane etc

Wouldn't put Lids or Murphy in the same sentence as those top tier players at all.. Murphy still has a long way to prove he has what it takes to get back up to where he was 6-7 yrs ago and with Judd nearly having it (calling it quits) I think it might be past his realms.
Lids is an extremely durable and respectable player and has greater importance and emphasis considering his stature and role within the club but as others have said in terms of his playing ability he is good but not super elite..

H1bb3i2d

I might consider Murph and Lids a little more when they prove they can break a tag. Any good player can run riot with little to no attention. It takes a great one to do it against the best stoppers in the league, something guys like Ablett, Pendles, Fyfe and Selwood do on a regular basis.

sammy123

Differnce between ablett and lids/murph. Is ablett breaks tags. He still gets 25+ while being tagged. Where as lids and murph get less than 20

Ablett is a class above everyone he is a freak. Lots of great players eg pendles jpk rocky etc

But ablett is all better then them

I need a R11 bye mid. Already have Lewis and Sloane. What do we think of Murph as an option? Priced at $502k. Carlton seem to be showing a bit more under Barker. With Judd retiring, Murph will no doubt attract more attention. Do we think his scores will suffer as a result?

He's a teaser for mine.
Cheap but I would look elsewhere.
B Ellis? M Wallis?

Funny how this has turned out - would totally agree with you wato, other than maybe bumping Rocky into the super elite category, but still, look how Buddy, JPK, Jelwood, Sloane, and Jobe have turned out so far... Sheesh. Who'd a thunk it??

Jimmykidd

Didn't get tagged against the crows. He will definitely cop attention from teams. Cheap, but big risk
