Cricket icon Richie Benaud is in a stable condition in Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital after being injured in a car accident on Wednesday.

A Channel Nine statement, issued today, said the 83-year-old commentator had suffered chest and shoulder injuries.

"No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself," Benaud said in a statement.

He is expected to be in hospital for a few days.

"Mr Benaud, who turned 83 earlier this month, was driving home alone to Coogee mid-morning yesterday when the accident happened," the statement said.

"Police attended and there were no charges. The car had mounted a nature strip and hit a small brick wall.

"Despite being in some discomfort, the former Australian cricket captain and legendary all-rounder remains in fine spirits and good humour."

Benaud's wife Daphne said she was quite concerned at first but "today he's looking unbelievably well"

QuoteSad news this, commentary icon Richie Benaud will not be able to fulfil his commentary duties, as he is reportedly back in hospital with complications following his October car crash.

Benaud, 83, is said to be in hospital to receive further treatment on lingering back complaints. He had been expected to make his return to the commentary during the Sydney Test.

Thought i would find this and use it to again wish Richie all the best with his diagnosis of skin cancer. Haven't seen much of Richie since his car accident and to see him yesterday was a bit of a shock as he looked frail. All the best Richie for a speedy recovery to good health, you are much loved by many Australians and international cricket fans.

Well reprised Grazz.

We should all take up his message and get skin checks regularly.  I have a couple that are being watched and get checked and in fact will get another check when I go to the doctor today,
I played under age cricket in short sleeves and shirts with just a baseball cap like a lot of we older members and when sun screen was just its infancy.

Richie is a great man and greatly respected and a true gentleman and I join in wishing him all the best for recovery.
