ST KILDA will lose one of its heart-and-soul players at the end of the season, after Lenny Hayes flagged his retirement today.

Hayes, 34, informed his teammates of the decision during a player meeting at the Saints' Linen House Centre this morning.

The former skipper has played 291 games for the Saints, which places him fifth on the club's list of career games, behind Robert Harvey, Nathan Burke Stewart and Barry Breen.

He will leave the game with an impressive list of achievements, including three St Kilda best-and-fairest and All Australian awards, as well as a Norm Smith Medal from the 2010 drawn Grand Final. He placed third in the 2009 Brownlow Medal, won by Geelong's Gary Ablett.

This makes me very sad. He is my favourite player from another team that hasn't played for Carlton

He was doing so well this year, so thought he might go around for one more.

Yeh i thought he'd go again. Think the body is a bit worn out.

Well played Lenny on a great career. A true legend and will be missed. One player that was always picked in fantasy teams before his body started to give way.

Such a shame that he wont make it to 300 games though

Lenny Hayes is such a good bloke if he was offered $5 million to play 1 more season he probably wouldn't do it because he isn't just in it for the money

well maybe he would who wouldn't for 5 mil
