FREMANTLE forward Chris Mayne could be set for more stints in defence, with coach Ross Lyon praising the 25-year-old's effort to curtail Jack Darling during Sunday's win over West Coast.

Mayne, who kicked 37.12 last season, entered the derby under growing pressure to perform after booting just two goals from his opening five games.

The 188cm forward responded by kicking the second goal of the match, before being swung onto Darling when defender Zac Dawson injured his ankle in the second quarter.

Darling finished the match with just two goals from 14 possessions, with Mayne keeping a tight check on the star forward.

With the disgusting delivery into our forward line and a crumbling forward structure, I really think Darling did well to get it 14 times and kick two :P

Darling kicked his 2 only when Mayne went to the backline to cover for Dawson and both of those were on Mayne.  I wouldn't exactly call Mayne a "Key Defender".  Darling chased and tackled extremely well but I think the rest of his game wasn't that great.  Yes I do understand that bad delivery doesn't help but he does push up the ground quite a lot so that nullifies it a little.
