Caddy vs. Varcoe

Undecided on who I want at F5, its down to these two but I can't split them!

CADDY - A high draft pick who is ready to breakout, expected to have more time in the midfield this season and therefore probably less games as the sub as well. He averaged about 75 when he wasn't the sub which isn't too bad at all. Will make money but the question is how much, I want at least 75 from him.

VARCOE - 24K less than Caddy and has been in the system for longer. Showed a few years back that he could play and score well when he averaged 83 in 2010. After a very poor year last year I think he has something to prove to the cats and the afl world and he has publicly spoken about his disappointment in himself and that he is looking to 2014. Tom Hawkins also mentioned early in Jan that Varcoe was training the strongest out of anyone at the club and had come back in brilliant shape. I wasn't considering him at all until the first NAB game, he played through the midfield and with 21 possessions (11 contested), 6 tackles, 5 inside 50's, 1 goal and 6 centre clearances (equal most so far in NAB with zaharakis) from just 60% game time I was pretty impressed. I feel like if he moves up the ground into that position he could improve his scores greatly, I am now considering as he would also be extremely unique, thoughts???

Varcoe caught my eye in his first game Caddy not so much but it's only one game so will keep an eye on both

colmullet

i think at their prices you would be wanting at least 85+ from them to make enough money for it to be worthwhile and im not to convinced either will....Tomahawk is the best bet to do that i reckon

Caddy, with Christo and Motlop out it could mean more mid time and his spot is nearly cemented in the best 22.

If it were a choice between Caddy and Varcoe I would definitely go Caddy- excellent pre-season and in the experience window where players start to breakout. Varcoe to me is in the same category as Higgins- injury prone and will never pick again.

I would have to agree with colmullet's comment about Tomahawk- no JPod down forward and touch wood no further back issues and I would predict that Hawkins would average 80-90 which for a F4/F5 would make enough cash to upgrade him to a Wingard/Martin etc (that you would not be able to fit into your starting side) during the bye rounds.

There seem to be cheaper options for F5 like Lamb/Rohan/Fasolo etc who need to be watched closely for a F5 spot as you could use the extra cash to have as many keepers as possible from round one.

Surely u could make the same argument for Varcoe? He is def in best 21 and will also benefit from Christo and Motlops injuries?

Liked the look of Caddy but Varcoe has been around and Caddy lacked poise and efficiency - got a lot of ball but didn't score that well.

Yeah you could but Caddy is more of a mid, Varcoe doesn't know where he'll play and I feel Caddy is a safer pick.

With all the good options in the 150-250k range in the fwds I would think you dont need someone as expensive as caddy/varcoe there. But would definately go Caddy out of those two.

I think everyone's overating the 150-250k fwds bracket.
Mitch Clark - unlikely to be ready R1
Alex Fasolo - not sure if he's in the pies best 22, vest candidate
Nathan Bock - Prestia reckons R3
Jed Lamb - Very unproven, vest candidate
Gary Rohan - Vest candidate, not a great scorer

Personally, thinking of going with higgins, if fit for R1, if not ill go for another premium or rookie.v

Still higgins, kennedy, boyd, hogan, menzel, along with the 5 above.

If you could find about $60k  Mathew Wright might be  the go. But to answer your question, I would steer clear of Caddy until he improves his disposal efficiency. Cheers.     ;) ;)

Cheers for all the feedback guys. And yeah Matt Wright wouldn't be a bad pick up however im worried he will tag often and therefore will impact his potential scores, do you agree???

I've been on Caddy all preseason, kid will be a star!

With Christo and Motlop out I immediately thought great here is Caddy's chance to shine. But thinking a bit harder about the situation Geelong now face, they have lost all if the pace out of their midfield, I'm actually starting to think that they'd prefer to have Varcoe in there to get some leg speed around the ball. They already have plenty of inside midfielders in Jelwood, Kelly, Caddy, GHS.

Although in writing this Caddy isn't exactly slow and the also have Stokes and Stringer so ignore this post cos now I'm
back to square one hahah  :o

And why would you say that he is a vest candidate and not one of the younger players? I see him playing out most games

RaisyDaisy

Wouldn't touch Varcoe

Cant see him averaging any more than 65-70, and he puts in too many stinkers
