Hawthorn Football Club is pleased to announce it has appointed James Fantasia to the position of General Manager â€" Football Operations.

With almost 20 years’ experience in the AFL industry, Fantasia has headed up Western Bulldogs’ Football department for the past six years.

Prior to that, he built a strong track record of experience and success at Adelaide Football Club as Recruiting Manager (1995-2007) and in senior management at the SANFL (1991-1995; 2006-2007).

Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox is thrilled to welcome Fantasia to the Club.

“We’re extremely pleased to appoint James as our General Manager â€" Football Operations and we’re certain his wealth of experience and industry knowledge will be of great benefit to our Club,” Fox said.

“We have been impressed with James’ leadership style and we’re confident he will fit into the high performance culture at Hawthorn well.”

“James is a quality operator, an outstanding character and is highly respected within the football industry, and we look forward to having him join our team,” Fox said.

Fantasia takes over from Mark Evans, who has joined the AFL as General Manager Football Operations.

Hawthorn Football Club has accepted the resignation of GM - Football Operations James Fantasia, who departs the Club for personal reasons. Fantasia has been on an extended period of sick leave for the past few weeks.

Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox said while it was disappointing to farewell Fantasia, the Club wished him all the best.

"We respect that James has put his health and family first in making this decision, and we are disappointed to lose someone with his experience," Fox said.

"While James was a part of the Hawthorn family for only a short time we thank him for his service and wish him well in the future."

Fantasia outlined his disappointment in departing the Club.

"Given the stage of the season I didn't want to let the Club down. but unfortunately I have had to make the difficult decision to leave due to health reasons," Fantasia said.

"Under medical advisement, I will take some time to focus on my recovery before looking to return to work. Whilst my health condition is not of a critical nature a full recovery is my priority".

Head of Coaching and Development Chris Fagan will continue to act as GM - Football Operations.
