Just heard that the great jockey Roy Higgins passed away this afternoon after a long illness.

Was always a gentleman and those of us who are a little older will remember the "Professor" as he was known.

He was a legend of the sport and sympathies to his family.

Indeed an absolute legend, along with George Moore, Damien Oliver and Jim Cassidy, Roy Higgins is 1 of 4 Australasian jockeys to have won 100+ group 1 races. Among his achievements were winning 2 Melbourne Cups for Legendary Trainer Bart Cummings and winning the Melbourne Metropolitan Jockey Premiership 11 times.

The man nicknamed "The Professor" will be sadly missed. RIP Roy Higgins.
