Sydney Swans defender Marty Mattner today announced his immediate retirement from AFL football, bringing to an end his 222-game career.

Mattner has been plagued by a degenerative hip condition for a number of years, but it has become more troubling in recent times.

The 30-year-old has not played since being subbed from the round seven match against Hawthorn. He trained on Tuesday but remained hampered by the hip condition.

A key member of our defence, he will be sorely missed. Cheers, Marty

Good riddance

Somebody woke up on the little dog side of the bed this morning

Good luck in the future Marty.

Missed 2 games in 5 years before this year and was a key member of our back 6.

Thanks for the memories Marty, you have served your club well.

Good form JB, good to see your true colours come out

Good Luck for the Future Marty - Well done - Trust the medicos get the condition control for you.

Terrible news, always gave 100%. Some of his run down tackles have been game changing!

Fantastic left foot shot for goal from outside 50 as well.

Another under rated Swans player that will be hard to replace.

Good Luck Marty.

I just read this now. It is always unfortunate when injury is what forces a player to retire.

I'll always remember that tackle he made on Birchall in the Grand Final in the dying minutes... was classic Mattner.

This is a shame. I liked him as a player. Always sad to see a player forced into retirement by a nagging injury. All the best Marty!

Mailman the 2nd

Sounded like he might've had some major health issues if he played on

:'( He was a really solid defender too with some nice speed and a real shame

Yep, really personified him as a player. Always doing the hard work.
Gave 100% for the team every time he played. Was one of the most courageous players I've seen play too, always going back with the flight in front of key forwards.

Was a good servant for the Crows and equally for the Swans, all the best Marty.  ;)
