Well I just think that he may  not be a true proven premium yet. Probably wrong, but it was such a good year last year for him that he may find it had to back it up... Moloney entering the fray as well, another hard nut.  :-\

Probably got no real reason not to pick him really.
Ha ha. That was pretty much my train of thought on a whole bunch of players until I picked up the prospectus!

Hello one and all.

Here's my pre-NAB 1 team. A bit if a change since my last but all for the good (hopefully).

DEF: Goddard -- Gibbs -- Hanley -- Pittard -- Goodes -- Docherty (Heath -- Terlich)
MID: Swan -- Ablett -- Boyd -- Pendlebury -- Jelwood -- Embley -- Lonergan -- O'Meara (Jones -- Viney)
RUC: Mumford -- Leuenberger (Sinclair -- Currie)
FWD: Cox -- Johnson -- Rockliff -- N Riewoldt -- Byrnes - Macaffer (Kerridge -- Lamb)
CASH LEFT: $50,600

I reckon that nailing your starting team will be even more critical this season. As such, I've gone with a few premium types who - according to their recent form - offer good value in the first half of the season (such as Hanley, Boyd, Jelwood, Mumford and NRoo). With the $50k I have in the bank I can upgrade these guys if they stink it up prior to their first price change.

Thoughts, folks?

Can't fault any of your rookie selections, don't trust Kerridge and Lamb at all but going by forward rookies at this stage who can you trust.
Nicky Voldt great pick.
Same applies for Sellers, I'd have him but conflicts with my structure and aren't going to drop Swan, Cotch, Pendles or Stants for him, or upgrade Fyfey.

Dislikes
Ablett- won't even bother. Just be prepared for that 112 average.
As I said I don't like the taste of Lamb (see what I did there) or Kerridge, not much more to choose from though. Maybe use your 50k to upgrade Lamb to Mayes, Menzel, Daniher etc?

Unnamed Section
Do you reckon Hanley will average more than Dys Hepp and/or turn into a keeper?
If you're confident in Kerridge and Lamb, maybe another way to use that 50k would be to upgrade Jones or Lonergan to Wines? I rate J and L as low-to-mid 70s averages for 2013, while can easily see Winesy going 80+ maybe even closer to 90 than 80. Massive gun and will slip straight into Port's midfield.

Ratings
Backs: 7.75/10
Mids: 9/10
Rucks: 8.5/10
Forwards: 8.25/10
Overall: 8.35/10 pretty good side

Thanks Jukes.

I'm not Nostradamus, so can't predict who'll average higher out of the second-tier defenders BUUUUT by looking at recent averages against early season opponents  (i.e. last two years), Hanley and Hartlett are the two that stand out. Heppell, OTOH, has posted some poor scores against his early season opponents. Yes, we will see natural improvement in Heppell's output but we should see that from all three of these guys. Sideways trade is always a possibility.

On the rookies, you're right that Lamb and Kerridge are hardly locks, but they both would be solid scorers if in the best 22. Wines has been in my team all pre-season but I'm happy to start without him as I can use the $50k to upgrade the worst performing rookie prior to Wines' 3rd game. With my strong midfield, all I need from Lonergan and Jones is that they be solid contributors. Again, $50k could turn them into Wines etc if they end up spudding it.
