The F.A.R.K.

27 Year old defender, cant handle a tag and has never averaged over 78 in 167 games you may be thinking

Look a bit closer at his stats

Over the off season Pearce has moved across to Fremantle, a team that managed 14 wins in 2012 and finished 7th on the ladder.
In 2012 Pearce played for Port who managed 4 wins and finished 14th on the ladder

35 69 58 71 61 101 107 99 62 70 86 52 73 80 78 85 67 105 32 72

The games in bold are games power won

That is an average of 96.75 when Port won and an average of 67.25 when Port lost. So if Pearce held those averages at Freo in 2012 he would have had an overall season average of 86. Now i dont think Pearce will average 86 in 2013 but, at a new club and at a stronger club he wont cop as much attention from taggers, so there should already be an increase there on Pearces points. More wins means better footy by Pearce so another point increase there. He had a season average of 73 in 2012, i reckon he should add at least 5, at the best 12 points to that average in 2013

Minimum Average: 75
Maximum Average: 88
Predicted Average: 80

Mark Stone (Freo stoppages coach) said in an interview last night that D Pearce will spend most of his time in the midfield.

Which is even better for his dream team scores. When he played defence at Port he was copping heavy fwd tags because he set up ports game. Freo already have Hill who does that role really well and Pearce moving into midfield will mean less tags on him

Double win, leaves Duffman on the flank ;D

Not worth the risk.

Pass

Sonetimes you have to risk. If you pick up pearce as d5 or d6 priced at a 73av and he comes out and averages 80+ he will be a keeper.

While there is always a fine line between laconic and lazy for players of his talent, I think he has spent too much time on the lazy side of the line. If Lyon can beat that out of him in a pre season that would be good, but I reckon it may take some time.

Lazy, or not being able to handle a tag? Yes he hasnt lived up to potential but is he lazy?

SydneyRox

My opinion would be probably. If you aren't lazy you work harder to break the tag, put yourself into some space and have an effect on the game. Being traded to get a fresh start might help him, but only if he works hard to go with it.

I would look at Mitch Morton as an example. He couldn't buy a game at Sydney even though he was kicking bags of 8 and 9 goals
in the reserves. He got a game when he worked at what the team wanted him to do, his defensive side, and some of the things he did defensively in the finals was very important. If Freo can get Pearce to buy in properly, then it will be a big step, until I see something, I wont be jumping on board.

I'd definitely rather take the risk of Duffield anyway, he certainly has the potential to average 95+, especially with Broughton out of the side!
Pearce has never averaged 80+ in his lengthy career, he definitely could go 80-90 but a pass for me - too risky. but i'll radar. would take massive balls to pick
