Round 19 Update

The final Round produced a couple of upsets with both the first and second placed teams being defeated in a wake up call to them both. Did not cost them ladder position though as the Breakers could not make up the percentage required to snatch first place, The Badgers continue to flex their muscle with a huge win and storming into fourth position and the double chance. We watch now as the final series commences.

Bradford Badgers 29.16.190 defeated Huddersfield Hawks 24.13.157
In a game that was important to both sides as the winner would in all probability secure 4th place, the Breakers really flexed their muscles with a comfortable win. The Hawks were competitive for the first half but the Badgers midfield completely dominated the second half powering them to the comfortable win. Wingard tied to stop this second half dominance but lacked the necessary support, The Badgers no doubt will test the premiership aspirations this week against the Minor Premiers the Werewolves,

Crosby Cruisers 25.17.167 defeated Winchester Werewolves 22.18.150
Late changes: Adam Tomlinson replaced Matt Priddis for the Werewolves.
In what was an upset result the Cruisers comfortably defeated the Werewolves in another encouraging performance under new coach Ossie85. The injury depleted Cruisers lifted across the park and despite having to play a makeshift ruckman the Cruisers midfield completely dominated their more fancied opponents. The Werewolves suffered an early blow when Captain Matt Priddis withdrew before the bounce and without his leadership the Cruisers midfield ran riot with a number of Werewolves playing well below their best. Coach Colliwobblers no doubt will be working hard this week to get the team back up to face the inform Badgers in the qualifying final.

Liverpool Lobsters 24.13.156 defeated Newcastle Falcons 22.19.151
Late changes: Taylor Hunt replaced Jack Newness and Tom Simpkin replaced Christian Howard for the Falcons.
In another victory for the new coaching regime the Lobsters defeated the Falcons ensuring they miss the finals after being the early high fliers. The Lobsters defence set up the win as they were able to thwart a lot of the Falcons forward forays after the midfields virtually cancelled each other out. The Lobsters were also well served by a stella performance from evergreen Brent Harvey who played his best game of the season. Despite the win it was not enough to lift them of the bottom of the table due to the upset wins by the Giants and the Swaggers.

Birmingham Bombers 26.13.169 defeated Manchester Magic 25.18.168

In the closest game of the round the Bombers just held out the fast finishing Magic urged on by their home crowd to win by a solitary point. The Bombers bounded out to an early lead due to the early dominance of ruckman Dean Cox but the Magic clawed their way back to take the lead at 3/4 time. The 2 teams went goal for goal in the final quarter with the lead changing 8 times during the final quarter but it was a telling mark to Hamish Hartlett with seconds remaining that sealed the one point win for the Bombers, The win cemented the Bombers place in the Top 8.

Staines Steins 22.13.145 defeated Leeds Leeches 20.28.138
In a somewhat sloppy game where disposal efficiency was way down the Steins comfortably defeated the Leeches.
With both teams out of final contention this game never reached any great heights and only the closeness of the game maintained the interest, It was only the brilliance of Steins captain Kieran Jack in a best on ground performance that enabled the Steins to finally seal the win. Forward Kurt Tippett continues to show why was really missed by the Steins in the eraly rounds.

Hebden Bridge Hedgehogs 25.12.162 defeated Bilston Bunnies 22.13. 145

In a game that the Hedgehogs had to win to ensure a position in the 8 they comfortably defeated the Bunnies to cement 8th position, With Matthew Lobbe dominating the hitouts the Hedgehog midfield were able to exert an early dominance with Dustin Martin consolidating by converting this pressure into goals. The Hedgehogs just consolidated the lead in each quarter and came out comfortable winners.

Grope Lane Giants 23.16.154 defeated Nottingham Hoods 20.19.139
Late changes: Will Schofield replaced Garrick Ibbotson for the Giants.
In what was undoubtedly the upset of the season the Giants defeated the 2nd placed Hoods. Coach Nails must be lamenting the early injury toll to the Giants for a season that might have been, With Matthew Leuenberger dominating comeback ruckman Aaron Sandilands, the giants midfield were able to quickly the ball forward to Matthew Wright and Jarrad Grant who converted these opportunites.  Despite the efforts of Gary Ablett and Scott Pendlebury the Hoods were unable to exert any score board pressure. All round disappointment by the Hoods who will have to lift if they are to defeat the Breakers in the 2nd qualifying final.

Swindon Swaggers 25.17.167 defeated Oxford Owls 22.14.146
The Swaggers continue to show their strength now under sole coach Jukes by posting another high score to comfortably the Owls. With Shane Mumford domination the ruck contest, led by Captain Tom Rockliff  the midfield of the Swaggers were able to dominate. Harry O'Brien continues to regain form after his sabbatical as well for the Swaggers. Swaggers supporters must be wondering where this form was early in the year. For the Owls Sharrod Wellingham shows what he is capable of and they must be lamenting his unavailability early.

Swansea Breakers 24.14.158 defeated Hastings Hurricanes 23.14.152
In a game that was pivotal to both for positions in the 8. the Breakers despite being a little down on form were able to defeat the Hurricanes by a goal and cement 3rd position. As would be expected by teams fighting for a position in the top 4, this was a very high class game with little between the 2 teams. The Hurricanes went out to an early lead which they continued to hold until the third quarter. Despite the urgings of their strong home crowd the Hurricanes were unable to repel the final quarter surge of the Breakers led by Dane Swan and Steele Sidebottom and when Daniel Rich kicked a 60 metre goal with seconds remaining the Breakers prevailed, The Breakers still have some improving to do and will need to find something more if they are to defeat the Falcons in the 2nd qualifying final.
